Good evening,

Currently on my week of duty, i.e. having to work outside office hours too. I had to work on four different ships during the week-end. The last one just sailed. I shall have more time for TL starting tomorrow. Now I have to catch up other matters at home. In the meantime , I invite you to enjoy another recent shot.

Here is one of the four ships, the MV FEDERAL SAKURA in the background leaving on Sunday afternoon. In the foreground the tug Ocean Bravo is passing close to me after assisting the vessel to leave the berth on departure. See the map for my location as I was looking North

Technically : Time 15:22 hours; Experimenting a bit here , Speed and Depth of field.Ships are not Formula 1 cars, but I tried to play with various Exposure times and F-stop. Despite the Fast shutter speed, the image is blurred. The result here is a very narrow depth of field, almost like a macro shot. Not only the ship in the background is blurred as intended, but the stern of the tug as well. Only the tug bow with her name and wheelhouse are sharp.

Honestly , I like the result , I hope you will do too. For further change , I turned the uncropped image to B&W to give more focus on the tones than on colors , and I exceptionally opted for a white frame (^_*). But I will add the same in black as a Workshop.
Cheers!
Robert

Hi Robert,

It's an interesting experiment but I have some problems understandin the outcome/result.

To me it seems like it's the right side of the photo that is blurred while the left side is sharp. The bow of the ship in the background seems to be in focus to me.
Also, I tried to calculate the dof on www.dofmaster.com and given you Rebel XSI, 55mm focal length, f/10 and 15 (my guess) meter distance to focal point you would have had a total depth of field of approx 270 meters.
If the ditance to the focal point was more than 16 meters you would have infinite depth of field from about 8 meters away from you.

For the B/W conversion (I've only just started paying attention to this artform) I think the midtones are a bit too dark. It makes the water look very dark with little detail. I tried a workshop. I hope you like it.

Cheers,
Jens

Hello Robert
Excelent composition - I love the position of the small boat and the spedd ilusion that your capture give - and a great b/w work, with a great light and detail.
Have a great day, mb

Hi Robert,good friend,
It was long time ago that I read your kind and nice comments,
I missed you so much,
I have to say I love my friends here like you,
And I,m very glad to write something for you,
I missed you,
Best regards,
Ali...

Beautiful B/W shot!

une belle image,
Merci.

Hi Robert,
Very beautiful b&w,good capture,congratulation.
Best regards,
Ralf

Neat shot & a good experiment. I like the water tones from headless guy, but I like the tones in the white of the boat from yours. Not sure what software you're using, but if you are using ps cs3 you can use a b&w adjustment layer then lighten up just the blues. Another way to do it if you are using ps earlier versions is to make a duplicate layer set to luminosity and then use apply image, select the blue channel and set the mode to lighten. If you post the color version to a workshop, I'll show you a sample, just let me know if you posted it.
