[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Good Day ,

Let me propose you another shot taken Friday the 6th , when the MV Federal Elbe docked at sunrise in the port of Becancour. As you can appreciate the ice is covering the harbour basin. The icebreaker CCGS Pierre Radisson did attend previously to break the pack . Now the tugs are towing the ship at her dock.

I was actually on the dock when I took the shot. She was coming slowly dead on the dock.How do you manage to get the ship alongside without ice between the ship and the dock ? Skill and patience is needed. After this shot , the ship turned to starboard keeping the bow next to the berth, and like a wedge , she followed the berth wall to move away the ice. The ship after ran a few lines ahead . When mooring lines were secured the vessel, engine ahead worked to drift the remaining ice to her stern . One tug was necessary to go between the ship and the dock to move it eventually. That morning it took about three hours to complete the manoeuvre.

Technically. Image uncropped . Note the tug is leaning on one side as she was pushing hard against the ship. You can still see the yellow tones of the sunrays against the superstructures. With PS CS4 , darkened light tones, added a bit more contrasts. Then with Photofiltre resized, sharpened and framed to TL standards.

See the map for my exact POV. Actually you can see from that aerial view the traces left by the ice breaker , and tugs to break the pack. This satellite image was taken probably very shortly after a ship's departure.

Really interesting photo. Well composed, sharp, good colour.. Looks to be way too cold for me (unless I'm on a mountain with skis on my feet).

Striking colours in this picture. Also the ice is quite spectacular, really blue. Interesting details, you are a lucky man working in such an interesting environment. Great composition well presented as always :-)

an excellent overview of this wonderful
two boats in a beautiful ice broken
in tone of blue, I find very interesting of how the ice can have this beautiful blue in it. I'm sure is not this beautiful blue boat.
The definition of colors and details of the photo is great!
The boat in the color red seems to be freezing, your hull
already have brands of ice.

Hi Robert, we have had an extremely cold hard winter here on the prairies, so I've been thinking a lot about how to capture the cold in pictures. You can tell people how cold it is, but often it just doesn't come across in photos. But in this one, I think it really does - you've really captured "the cold". The frost on the sides of the icebreaker and the ship, the broken up ice .. which looks like it's freezing again as fast as it gets broken. This really looks cold! Great observation.
