[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This follows the looking down theme on ice fishing which we had this week end, where more of the sport is shown.

1-A hole is dug and the bait box is isntalled, Alex putting in the bait which are small minnows.

2-At the top left is the drill they use to make the holes in the ice, Normally 2 men are required to do this to steady the drill and good boots are needed as if the drill slips, you may wind up as a mono pod.

3- The posts are all spots that have been drilled but were covered over during the night so they have to be drilled again.

4-The red apparatus is the fishing line that goes down the hole, if you notice there is a little flag that will wave when a fish is caught.

5-Part of the fish that were caught, and often you will find one that will still keep flapping around.

6- The fishermen have their little shack set up on the ice, usually a bay, complete with heater so they can keep warm while waiting for the fish to bite, tables and chairs are required as many will cook and eat the fish while there, often inviting friends to come over and share and having a beer or two while waiting.

This is a big outdoor sports, you need to be dressed with very warm clothing especially boots, dresing in layers is recommended.

Bonjour Dot,
Odile

This would be SO much fun to try!! Nice work and great info on this sport! We NEVER get to do this in Texas! Our lakes just don't freeze..although one year we DID have ICE floating in the Gulf of Mexico...rare! This is super!

Hello Dot,

What interesting notes! If the weather is so cold, it's a great way of eating al fresco!
What surprises me is that fish are moving around under the ice! As they are cold blooded, you would imagine they would undergo suspended animation until the temperature is warmer!

Back to your photograph. Amazingly clear details taken from a good pov.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi, Dot!

Very interesting world. Hard work, special knowledge are needed for the acquisition of the food. (I envy it now, in this heat. :-))

Okay, now I feel that I know a lot more about this way of fishing, but I think I make the pictures and they can do the fishing. So you were also dressed up nice and warm - did not realise that in your previous picture, but of course you were standing on that ice as well.
Attractive action shot here - thanks for the explanation.
