| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Hi Folks , this is a rather straight forward view of a local pond found in the small town of High River Alberta at the graveyard , being at a graveyard makes it a rather quiet place seldom visited I usually get it all to myself , which is good I get some nice shots of stilts and water fowl there :-)
this is another HDR effort again processed using Photomatix this time I used seven exposures to create this image. my processing aim was not for one of the really fantastic effects that one can get from an HDR , but to aim for more of a realistic effect.
I would say that it was difficult but truth be known it was really very simple , I just set my camera to a bracketing program for seven exposures set the EV offset for the bracketing to 2/3 stop or .7 as the lcd displays that , put the camera into high speed continuous shooting mode focused , composed and fired away. I did not even bother using my tripod , but the D-300 is a fast camera 7 exposures happen inside one second so it is not too hard to keep steady for that.
to process it I opened up nikon capture nx and batched the seven files into tiff format with straight camera settings , it took less than 1 minute to batch the files.
I opened up photomatix and selected the seven tiff files setting all of the options for correction in the photomatix dialog , the software corrects for the small camera shifts that did happen , and did a really good job of it too.
after a couple of minutes of tinkering with the settings in the tone mapping stage I processed this image , and felt rather impressed with how well the software could turn the crazy array of over / under exposed images into such a color true image.
I would say that some of the tips I have read here on TL sure payed off , using more exposures does work better , the 7 exposures smoothed out a lot of the strange light issues I have encountered particularly in the sky and horizon line , and the higher number of exposures advanced noise removal as well. there is still a bit of odd lighting on the image but not as bad as I have seen trying with fewer exposures...
thanks for stopping in
regards

Hi Art,
Nice shot, I really like the colors generated from the HDR. I have the D300 and have not tried the bracketing. However, after reading your note I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the detailed explanation about this picture.
Regards,
Kevin
Interesting shot, not as dramatic as other HDR, but that makes it more realistic like you said. Very informative note as well. Great colors and nice scene. Take care,
Migelo
