Hi Folks , today I have a HDR rendition of the Museum of the Highwood , well at least the walkway in front of the museum :-) , this museum was made from a historical CP rail station that now rests in the middle of our small town. I thought that the old architecture and walkway would make for a neat composition with lots of perspective.

this HDR is a merging of 7 exposures bracketted at 2/3 stop's , to step outside of the ussual instead of post production work in photoshop I decided to go with Nikons Capture NX , a rather sturdy application made by the Nik software company. Nikon capture nx may sound very camera oriented and it is , but none the less any one interested in good software should read on :-) ,capture nx is very good for rendering nikons NEF raw format while maintaining exact camera settings even giving the option to alter settings after the fact, but the Nik Software also has an additional strength it uses a new simplified masking aproach called control points , that allowed me to make alterations to very specific elements of the image , take the two light posts and the benches , after the HDR rendering these elements came across a little bit washed of their contrast , but by placeing a control point on them a mask is created that allowed me to darken just the posts and benches and to give them a little additional contrast. If you where to look to the right side of the image you will notice that there are buildings between the bushes , at first these where very saturated, contrasty and distracting , but with the use of only two control points I was able to manipulate the saturation brightness and contrast of these elements to reduce the impact of the distraction.

the Nik soft control point system is also available as a plugin for Photoshop , I dont really know if they have a trial edition or not though but they are certainly worth looking into. some of the Nik software is a bit on the costly side , but I imagine that is because it quickly proved its worth and has become more popular. at least worth looking into , I have never used any other than Capture NX one and two , but they also have a color fx software , a smart sharpening software as well as a noise removal software , I believe that these are all equipped with this rather clever control point system and available as photoshop plugins , one really does not need to do anything more than google "Nik" to look in on that....

this is about my most processed image yet , I hope it was worth it ;-)

thanks for stopping in
regards
Art

hi Art,
i am just entering the world of hdr, myself.

this is a very nice rendering and not 'overcooked' like some of my efforts.
i like the subject and the pov.

there is a haloing effect at the roof. i have encountered this in my images and can be lessened if you alter the white point.

i use nik viveza and color efex pro. the 'u' point system is awesome.
Brian

Very warm, inviting image. Great job on the HDR, not overdone at all, and still very sharp. TFS

Hi Art,
great notes, very informative, thanks for taking the time to explain your technique. IMHO I find this HDR image to be one of the better renderings of this technique. It's like what a Robert Bateman is to the art field, this looks so real,I feel like I could reach inside & feel the stonework, great work & TFS
