I want to make a point with this image, one of my big things is, to tell people not to be too fast in deleting images----this image was really nothing special when I first looked at it--it was a dull day, the ocean grey and there was nothing much in it to catch your eye and so I almost ditched it---but I tell people repeatedly to be careful of deleting memories. Some images may mean a lot to you in a few years time, maybe seeing them again will bring back memories of the day, the person, the circumstance-be careful, we are fast becoming a nation that disposes the not so perfect.
Anyway, one evening, a while after I took this, I started playing wth it in PS and cropped out other boats and some ordinary scenery and ended up focussing on this one vessel and it's tender---still dull though-so I converted to black and white---I still wasn't happy, so I inverted it and voila---not perfect, but after playing with levels and using the brighten, contrast tool, this is what I accomplished----it has won me a couple of competitions and I am happy with something that nearly went into the recycle bin.

Just a note though, be careful with the invert tool, it only works for some images---I hope this might help some of you and save some of those images that a few years down the road you might get a chuckle or tear from. Lynne

Couldn't agree more with your statement, in "most" shots there is something good waiting to come out if you can find it. The effect you've created here is almost like a pen and ink drawing (second time I've said that today). I particularly like the effect on the trees in the background. Maybe one other thing needed is a slight straitening of the landscape - although this could be an optical effect created by the angles of the lines in the photo now they are processed in this way.

Like a B&W pen sketch. It has come out really good Lynne, and a lesson for us all - thank oyu.
And I agree with Andrew about the tilt to the left.
But otherwise - BRAVO!
Janice

Hi Lynne,
nice presented the boats on the river and also the trees on the hill, good workshop - I like it:)
tfs,
regards Karolina

This has worked well, I like the detail, and the impression of trees in the background. I've become much more self critical since discovering this site, which is not a bad thing but it does mean that I'm sometimes a bit too quick to delete photos just because I don't think they're good enough to post here ... I'll look a bit more carefully at them in future!
Cheers, John.

Like an old painting....
I like too much the effect on the trees....
Special and very attractive...
Great work!!!
Claude

thanks for the tip, and I totally agree with you some photos work and some don't. I love this photo

An exquisite scene. Reminds me of lithotype art. It has a strong focal point (tall yacht) , with the eye being led to the small boat coming "out" of the picture. The tree rhythms in the background is a pleasant backdrop for the scene. I like your technique very much, it works beautifully.
