The Trouters' Special
St. John's to Argentia
On the 24th of May weekend the Trouters' Special left St. John's in the early morning and headed for Argentia.
The Trouters' Special ceased to exist with the demise of the narrow-gauge Newfoundland Railway, however, it still has a warm place in the hearts of many Newfoundlanders.
The joyful anticipation of knowing that all your friends will be on the train and that before five miles of clackety-clack go by every soul on the train will be your friend. Where else would one see so many stouthearted anglers at one time, such a variety of hats, rubbers (please don't call them waders) and clothing, of knapsacks, baskets and lanterns, of camps and kettles?
...with each passing mile, the conversation becomes more scintillating, the laughter more ready and jolly, and the song ever more eager to burst forth. By the time the train rounds the horseshoe at Holyrood the lubrication (in the wheel boxes, of course) has begun to assert itself and things are flowing very smoothly indeed
Departure Time varied (in the days before every holiday became a long weekend) If shops were open on the 23rd, leaving time was 10:30am to accommodate shop workers. If it occurred on a weekend, departure time was 8:30am. Quite a few turned up early, but just as many arrived late "swaggering under a full load"
Food--cans of beans, bully beef, fish, sausage, pickles, and catsup--the "trouters' delight" was a mug-up consisting of beans, homemade bread, and a strong, smoky cup of tea.
Music--a number of fiddles, guitars, mouth organs, accordions, and assorted musical instruments abounded (including some talented noses), people sang, and a few nimble step dances and square dances occurred in the very crowded aisles.
Stories and Jokes--the air was alive with loud voices telling tales, jokes, and stories of "the one that got away" in previous years on the way out; and the "one that got away" that day on the way back !!
