Close your eyes and imagine the fluorescent lamp fixtures from your childhood. These lights most likely hummed, flickered, buzzed, and created harsh, unnatural light. If you stood under one of these light fixtures, you may have appeared a pale shade of green.

Times have changed since the days of the noisy, flickering fluorescents. Manufacturers and research groups have spent the last decade improving the technology and performance of these lights. Fluorescents, which were first introduced in 1939 at the World's Fair in New York, are now available in compact sizes with miniaturized ballasts and lamps.

This bulb is actually called a Compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). CFLs last up to 10 times longer, use a quarter of the energy, and produce 90% less heat than standard incandescent bulbs.

I was actually using this light to light up an object for another photo, and found its shape quite interesting. I decided to put the camera to the test to see if it would actually photograph this bulb while it was on.
Needless to say...it worked!

**Post Pro - changed to greyscale, increased contrast, and burned the edges.

Oh yes! you can say that again Pamela ;)) Wonderful image indeed, the «light» levels ;)), the BW, the softness, and the compo make this a truly great capture. Wow...maybe this is the artistic feature they talk, right???

Wow, very cool studio work Pamela! I like the nice smooth sleek lines of the bulb against the black background. Good framing to top it off. :)

I like the composition and its simple interpretation of the light bulb. Well done.

I love the fact that this is a black and white image and it adds extra feel and mood to it.

I love it! Very good composition too. You did a fine job of burning the edges, it is effective.
