For quite some time now, I've been trying to catch a decent shot of these guys. I have found that is much easier said than done. They can take off and flap their wings rather quickly.

I've experimented extensively with various focus settings and I've had some limited success. I recently acquired a new Nikon D80. I thought I would see what the camera was capable of so I set the focus settings to completely automatic. This is what I ended up with.

Also, if you haven't tried it yet, the new Nikon Capture NX image editting software is more than a little interesting. I did some work on this image using that program. You can get a trial download on the Nikon website.

Cheers!

Hello Joe,
Yes it's very hard to get great picture of them in flight you never know where they will be going and when they will take off. But you were able to achieve it with brio on this one with the perfect focus and sharpness, great light and nice blurred background.
Very well done.
Luc

Superb capture, Joe, very impressive. We can sense the movement of the wings ready to go down again but for now he is just enjoying his floating in betwen movement. Great light & sharpness on the bird. Well done!

Fantastic capture, Joe! Wow! The bird really pops out of the image, almost as if it was superimposed. The detail on the wing feathers is incredible. Awesome job!

Hi Joe,

Happy New Year!!! A great photo with excellent details! I like the way the warm sun light enhances the details and colours of its feathers! I see your new toy is great!! :))

Very well done and TFS
