| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Recently I have been drawn toward religious symbols in my photography. This is one of many. I am trying to figure out what it means that I am taking all of these photos since these are not my usual subject matter. I think that I may be working out the tension between a longing for and a fear of religion.
This photograph was taken just after I finished a shoot of a glowing cross which I posted on TrekEarth. I found a small white cross planted in the ground and used a two second shutter speed to slowly zoom the lens while the shutter was open. I did this handheld to produce a bit more of a raw feeling.
The photo was converted to black and white in CS2 using the blue channel. I may have also subtracted some of the red channel until I got the tones just right. I then worked on local contrast through a heavy-handed application of the unsharp mask at a radius of 24pixels.
My wife tells me that this photo is very creepy. I'd really like to hear how it makes other people feel! |

This is a great photo. It does appear to have tension, but it works in making you think about it. I don't think it is creepy I think the light at the centre of the photo draws you in to the subject and offers a point of view. Great tones of shadows, midtones and highlights. I like it.
