[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This picture shows two of Canadian Maritime Pride. The replica of the famous schooner Bluenose sailing under the impressive Confederation bridge.

The day before, we went to visit the Bluenose II when she was docked in Georgetown. The skipper informed me that he was expected to sail under the bridge the next morning at around 7 a.m. As expected, at 7:04, the Bluenose passed under the bridge. This picture was taken just seconds before.

I took this picture early in the morning with the sun rising behind me and it was a bit hazy. I decided to use a Tobacco grad to give nice mood to this early morning scene. I am quite satisfied with the result.


Bluenose

The original Bluenose was built in Lunenburg, Nova-Scotia, and launched in 1921. It was designed to race for the International Fisherman's Trophy, but was also a working Grand Banks fishing vessel. In an 18-year racing career the Bluenose never lost the trophy, beating numerous Canadian and American ships. In 1942 the Bluenose was sold to carry freight in the West Indies. Unfortunately, it was wrecked off the coast of Haiti in 1946.

Plans were made to rebuild this famous ship from the same drawings as the original Bluenose. In 1963, Bluenose II was launched from the same shipyard, built by many of the men who had worked on the original vessel.

The Bluenose is immortalized on the Canadian 10-cent coin since 1937.


Confederation bridge

The Confederation Bridge is a 12.9 km long multi-span bridge spanning the Northumberland Strait to connect the provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick on the east coast of Canada. It is the longest continuous marine span bridge over ice-covered water in the world.

Construction started in October 1993, and the bridge officially opened, on schedule, to traffic on June 1, 1997. Over 80% of the construction took place on-land, including the casting of piers and other primary bridge components, to reduce costs, reduce weather dependency, maximize the use of local labour, and minimize effects on the marine environment.

Belle scène que celle là avec la courbe du Pont de la Confédération et le Bluenose qui s'approche toutes voiles dehors. Les conditions de lumières n'étant pas à leur meilleur tu a tout de même réussi à donner une certaine vie à la scène.

The old meets the new as the Bluenose II sails under the bridge. Nicely captured so early in the morning. The Bluenose is dwarfed by the bridge. I can really see how tall the bridge is compared to the ship. Wonderful soft lighting, warm colours and nicely composed.

In 1967 the Bluenose II came to Summerside (were I use to live) I was lucky to be able to get on deck. Such a beautiful ship.

Patrick this is a superstructure. A beautiful piece of architecture in an excellent setting. The Bluenose is a beauty and looks great on the left of the bridge. I like the morning colours and the good sharpness of the image. There is a lot of water on the bpttpm left but overall the image is well balanced by the span of the structure. Thanks Patrick.
