Day 3 - Petite-Vallee Song Festival

Good evening,

As promessed, The story behind this one. The reason of our Journey was this festival, and the pleasure to meet again Annie (Beger) and her husband. Martine loved the show Michel Rivard ( shown here ) gave nearly twenty years ago. So when she learned he would be the goodfather of the 2008 Edition, she urged me to attend this year. Pierre Flynn was the godfather back in 2006 when we attended for the first time at the Festival . The subject show was at the Café de la Vieille Forge . See the map for the exact location , and the link for a photo montage of the site. We had an intimate concert for our lucky audience.

Do I have to tell you we were extremely happy about our tickets. Thanks to Annie ! Second row tickets, for the coolest Birthday present( after the camera received from Martine of course) (*_^).

I took this one at a focal of 55 mm (^_^) from my seat, my camera above the shoulder of the gentleman sitting in front of me.

Now, about the shooting. Annie told me after the show ( and the next ones too). Robert , it seems you took a lot of photos tonight(^_^). Indeed, I did ! I was learning to work with my new camera . Shooting under changing light conditions, with moving musicians and singers, working without flash to respect the artists and the audience. The results were often disappointing as I had to work with slow shutter speed. I threw away a lot of shots.

To learn more , and see images from a pro, let me give you the link to the Official Photographer of the Festival. He was sitting just in front of me , the night after. He is a pretty cool and sympathic guy. Mr Alain Lauzier gallery for this day is available on the web, with all other events.

Any tips to improve are welcome ! Thanks to Paul Prince for his useful comment. I made a little workshop following it. See an unplugged version (^_^).

Technically: I ran the image trough Neat Image to clear a bit the noise. ( ISO was at 1600 !!! ). Than resized and framed. That is all.

Cheers!
Robert

Hi Robert,

Well done on this. It's a great capture. Nice and simple and no distractions. This kind of lighting is not all that photographer friendly and I think you did a great job with the exposure. I really like the background lighting as it resonates with the sunburst colouring on the guitar. The only thing I might be tempted to do would be to clone out the lead from the guitar...I know it's supposed to be there but I bet no one would ever question it and it would simplfy even more and give more impact to the subject.

Great shot.

Hi Robert
All I can say is that it is very life like, both in the vivid colors it has, the nice depth and frame.
I just like it
Best wishes

Bonsoir Robert,

Merhaba myfriend Dear Robert..
verynice shot and pov..superb colors and focus..bravo..selamlar

Merci.

Great shot and colours Robert,
regards.

Bonjour Robert,

jolie maitrise de la lumière sur cette composition difficile à réaliser.
Les couleurs sont magnifiques.
Très belle réalisation.

Amicalement
Laurent

The off-centre composition and the background blues/purples work very well in my view. Paul makes a good observation on the lead coming from the guitar, but it is one of those features not many people would notice until it has been pointed out to them.

I like the closed-eyes here, they add to the feeling that there is a performance going on and that the guy is engrossed in his song.

Possibly would look good in black and white? If so, the noise may be a feature rather than an irritant?

Hi Robert,

Very nice how the person is standing in the light. Wonderful sharpness here. Love it!

Greetings,
Dennis

Bravo !
