[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Once there was a little Russian camera called the Lomo Kompakt Automat. It was a Soviet knock-off of a tiny Japanese camera, mass-produced by government order for millions of Soviet citizens to use. It was, in its way, the Volswagen of cameras: created by government decree, intended for the masses, small, cheap, and hardy.

Ultimately the Lomo was discovered by western photographers just as it was about to go out of production. Its images have a unique kind of colour and vitality that is addictive, and soon the technique known as Lomography was born (you can read all about it at the Lomography page.) By the time photographers started lobbying to keep the Lomo in production, Lomography had become popular enough that their arguments were persuasive and the "little camera that could" continues to be made to this day (it's a cool story; you should visit the Lomography site and read about it).

Lomography, as far as I've seen, tends to constitute a montage of images, many of them repeated, which are thematically grouped (even if it's just pictures of a particular city on a particular day). This particular montage was created by western photographers taking pictures of the Lomo's birthplace, Russia. "Privet," by the way, is one way of saying "hi" in Russian.

This particular display was part of Contact, the Toronto Photography Festival, a month-long event in May every year in which photo collections are displayed in a variety of venues, from high-end galleries (the Magnum photographers were in one) to ordinary cafes. The work is a bit hit and miss, but it's always worth checking out just in case you find even one interesting new photographer, or one new approach to taking pictures. Plus it's a great excuse to explore the city and invite friends from out of town. You can also see a somewhat surreal picture I took inside the building (titled "Kubrick at the Film Board") in my TrekEarth portfolio.

All TrekLensers and TrekEarthers are hereby informally invited to the next Contact festival, but you can't all stay at my place 'cause there are too many of you.

There is a wider view of the montage in the Workshop.

Tech: layer (multiply) for richer colour. That's it. No cropping or other messing around.

This is very interesting, this lumography. I like the images it produces. I like both samples. To be able to do those repeat images are a timesaver. TFS.
