Origin of the name

Although tulips are associated with Holland, both the flower and its name originated in the Persian empire. The tulip, or Lale (from Persian لاله, lâleh) as it is also called in Turkey, is a flower indigenous to Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and other parts of Central Asia. It is unclear who first brought the flower to northwest Europe. The most widely accepted story is that of Oghier Ghislain de Busbecq, Ambassador from Ferdinand I to Suleyman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire in 1554. He remarks in a letter upon seeing "an abundance of flowers everywhere; Narcissus, hyacinths, and those which in Turkish Lale, much to our astonishment, because it was almost midwinter, a season unfriendly to flowers" (see Busbecq, qtd. in Blunt, 7). In Persian Literature (classic and modern) special attention has been given to these two flowers, in specific likening the beloved eyes to Narges and a glass of wine to Laleh. The word tulip, which earlier in English appeared in such forms as tulipa or tulipant, entered the language by way of French tulipe and its obsolete form tulipan or by way of Modern Latin tulīpa, from Ottoman Turkish tülbend, "muslin, gauze". (The English word turban, first recorded in English in the 16th century, can also be traced to Ottoman Turkish tülbend.)

Oh lala Mitra. This is teeming with pink beauty. A delightful posting, the tilips inner core is well focused and metered. I have no suggestions as to how to improve it as it appears flawless. My best regards...Danilo

Beautiful work Mitra! I love the softness of the edges here, and the sharpness in the middle of the flower! This is very nice!

Ciao Mitra

This is an attractive composition, a clever touch to use as a good blur background b/w!
The close-up work on the flower is well done, good color reproduction and sharp color palette on the petals ...
From very tasteful and well composed Mitra.

Hi Mitra,
this shot is wonderful, such delicate leaves, I also like the colour so much.
I'm right now in Holland, so your post is very good for me ;-)
But it's still too cold for tulips, we have to wait 2 months now until they will grow again.
Thanks and greetings

Hello,Mitra,
There so much tenderness in these lovely tulips. The interesting thing is that in our language we also have the same word for the same flower "lale"
