Red, White, and Blue

This past weekend was a double-birthday of sorts. July 1 was Canada Day -- Canada's official birthday -- while July 4 was Independence Day, the equivalent day for our neighbours to the south. A number of U.S. publications and television shows took note of Canada Day (including my absolute favourite, Mythbusters, which held a marathon broadcast from 6:00 p.m. until at least 3:00 a.m.), and I thought it would only be polite to return the favour.
I caught this image in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto (see my photo Modern Ruins on TE for notes on Parkdale). For some reason it had a familiar feeling to me, though at first I couldn't figure out why.
Only once I got it home and saw it on my screen did I realize that it seemed to me like a rearranged, pop-art American flag -- kind of Betsy Ross with a spray-can. You have red, white, and blue as the dominant colours. You have stripes, but they've been made vertical and turned blue. You have a field of stars, but they've been made red and intruded upon by other bits and pieces of tagging and stenciling, and then you have white as the background rather than being the colour of the stars and one set of stripes. Everything's been colour-swapped and cut up and reassembled, but the resemblance is there.
So this image goes out to my American "cousins." My best wishes to you all this Fourth of July. |

Very vibrant picture, Lee. The shadow on the wall adds a very nice dimension to the overall image. Great composition with the blue elements. I might have cropped the left edge to remove the blue, but otherwise, a great catch! TFS!

Nice shot. I can see how you saw the American flag colors on this. Nicely taken. I agree with Pierre, but, I already read the thread, so, I know what's up in your head. Good vivid colors and sharpness. Good eye.

Nice shot! I like the powerful 3-D pop-up effect of those blue poles. No compromise on colors too. Nice work.
Fits right in with my way of seeing street art in its context. You have done a good job deciphring the message even if it is not absolutely sure that it was there originally. But that's a permanent feature of art... Good job.
