This is my Daughter Naomi, "Lake Princess" as named by her.

Yesterday afternoon I took the kids to Providence Bay, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. About a 20min. drive from my home. Lake Huron surrounds Manitoulin Island. A grey cloudy day, I decided to do some experimentation on camera.
The Canon 20D has a B.& W. setting. Along with this setting, Canon has added some filters and tones. I went with the red filter and the sepia tone, again, all within the camera. I like that.
With the 17-85mm IS which was the lens used, a Tiffen Circular Polarizer lens filter was attached, to emphasize the clouds in the background.
Hi had Naomi pick a dry spot and showed her the pose I wanted. She did very well and looked relaxed and comfortable. I waited for the natural moment and took the picture without her knowing when I was going to shoot.
The camera was set on a tripod for this session and I was in a sitting position to get to her level.
Some will know that this is very difficult for me. If you don't, I have spinal fusion at L5-S1, to bend or getting down on the ground etc. will do me in very quickly. My back can't handle alot, o well, that's life. LOL
Hope you like this shot.

This is very well done Mike, I love the contrast with her blonde hair against the darker background. I also agree about the natural pose. She looks as though in thought. B

Hey Mike,
Really Great shot of your daughter! Very classy with beautiful lighting equally beautiful tones. Great composition and natural pose. The frame is very complimentary to your photo and your signature is very nicely done. Excellent piece of photography Mike. Lake Princess indeed suites this image of your beautiful daughter.
All this done within the camera(except for polarizer).
That's pretty cool. Can't wait to get my 20D...but not quite sure when that will be...

Great great work,

Michael

Wonderful composition, precious her expression.

Congrats

Marco

Wonderful portrait of your daughter, Mike ! Pinsharp and great compo, I hope she appreciates and likes it. How do you manage to get all those wonderful nature shots with a bad back like that ? Gosh you must suffer a lot for your pictures !

Marleen

Very nice portrait, Mike! You seem to have the perfect light on this cloudy day. Great composition! Excellent!

Great portrait of beautiful girl. I like the compo and softness of the photo. I am also experimenting with the B&W feature on the Canon 20D. I just completed a series of my daughter too today using the sepia and colored filter. I used red with B&W to give it contrast.
You did a great job. I'll keep your good note handy if I need more info.
Thanks for this nice post.

Say Hi to "Lake Princess" for me.

Very natural portrait and she looks so relaxed and comfortable by the side of the lake. Nicely composed with a lovely background but she is the star of this photo. Well done!

I already knew your Naomi was very photogenic, Mike. I think a Lake Princess deserves a colourful life though, I'm not too fond of the sepia... I think the surroundings would look better in colour too... well, just my opinion of course.
What I really like is her natural pose and the composition you made with it. Also, DoF is excellent. TFS.

Beautifull Mike...you don't have to learn from me, i canlearn from you :-)Very soft and romatic, i am sure she likes this picture you have taken of her.

Very nice composition Mike, Naomi has done a great job here also with her natural pose for the camera. This looks like one of those nice desert island shots. Well done Mike and Naomi

John

Well well trumpetplayer; that's a good picture. Settmg your daughter in flowerdress and in an old fashion colours.
Very good; very sharp (to the eye, not the ear). The picture brings direction to the right and perspective abroad.
Very good.
Thanks
Huub

Wow! She is gorgeous Mike. A very pretty and attractive young lady. Love the ankle bracelet. Her pose is nice and feminine. You certainly did a great job on this portrait of her. My congratulations for this one Mike. Going straight to my favourites.
I came back. Hope you've got some more shots of Naomi to show me/us.

Beautiful photo and beautiful, so natural model! I can remember her from some previous shots, she really reminds me of my niece (one of my favorite models).
Composition is great and usage of filters really leveled the photo the right way. Horizon in the first third, which is parallel to her legs in the lower third is excellent detail!
TFS, regards

Robert

Hello Mike,

Your helicopter serie was really nice. But your daughter is sweeter ! Natural shot, Natural beauty and brilliant idea to use your tripod, and wait for the good moment to shoot. Choice of filters is perfect too.
Well done.

Great composition Mike, and a very pretty daughter. Well worth the pain you endured while in a sitting position - hope your back gets better. Your choice of B&W along with the filters right from the camera shows the amount of thought and effort that went into this shot - and it is very evident with this great result. TFS, Sam

Hi Mike, indeed a princess. And the pose and teh scene and everything, specaily the tones, remonds of of those old movies, where te heroin just enjoys her moment of glory ;)
Veru beautiful shot

All the best, Stef

Ah finaly I managed to download this photo,
ah it's so nice to have dail-up with a true 5kb/s download if you are used to a 8Mb/s ADSL line. But I am happy that I can finaly see it after 2 days trying.
It's so romantic, and I realy like the sepia color, my 350 can do that too, but I never use it, dont know why.
Very nicely done. TFS Greetings from Thailand.

Mike, this is a gorgeous shot and a very special one for your daughter! the faded colour tones look nostalgic for some reason and it gives the whole photo a dreamy feel to it. Naomi looks like she might have been a mermaid in some previous life! hehe :) Your signature at the bottom adds a nice little flourish to it too.
cheers
- Tina

COngratulations Paoo

Brilliant Mike , just brilliant!

I also think you did well with your choice of B&W. I like the composition, and she does look very relaxed and natural. I like how her eyes are looking off into the distance. Job well done.

Hello Mike,

I am so glad that you've found my gallery!
I've just finished my cell group and decided to check out received critiques... and it was so wonderful feeling when I noticed your opinion bro!!!
As far as your photo concerned I really like it. I admire its premeditiated composition with interesting POV, nice DOF (the sharpness is supper) and perspective.
If you have time don't hesitate write e-mail to me.

best regards and God bless you Mike

dimeola

i dont want to sound repatative, so here it is. good composition, not only for the pose but also for the background location. I love it, when I think of the great lakes, this is the exact landscape. looks like it was a cloudy day, but an excellent day for shooting.

cheers
-Bart

Mike, you have one beautiful daughter. Take good care of her. And sometimes you write a mean note. This should be a model for all members on how to present lots of relevant info in a good way. And the photo is a gem. Into my favorites. I am not really intolose-up portraits but I would like to move into this kind of people shots some day. TFS.

Selam Mike
Very nice composition.I like sephia colors. Thanks for sharring.

Hmmm Mike, growing you own little mermaids? She realy looks great in this pose, relaxed and in comfort. The setup is great as you know beautifull views in your surrounding area. There's a nice depth in view and the rock in front adds to that effect. Great job, and a -very- nice photo to have of your child.
Realise that so many people can't creat photo's like these. They only have "snap-shot" like photo's if they are lucky and in time only have the memmory of how it was. Your effort here pays off, a true gem in your collection of family photo's.
See you again, Richard

wonderfull image!

dEar Mike,
