An estimated 50,000-100,000 people were left stranded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina swept through.
These were people who either chose to stay or were unable to flee along with the 400,000 city residents who left as the storm advanced.
Three days after the hurricane hit, Mayor Ray Nagin ordered an all-out evacuation of the remaining residents.
With two key routes across Lake Pontchartrain destroyed, evacuation began on the only passable routes out of the city, state highways 10 and 90 towards Houston.
A mass effort began to move 23,000 people from the deteriorating conditions in the New Orleans' Superdome in huge bus convoys to the Astrodome in Houston.
There were angry scenes at the city's convention centre where up to 20,000 were still waiting - with virtually no food or water - to be evacuated four days after Hurricane Katrina swept through the city.
With hotel rooms for miles around filled by people from New Orleans and elsewhere who fled before the hurricane struck, providing shelter for the new evacuees is a major challenge.
Texas Governor Rick Perry has said the state will host 25,000 people at Dallas' Reunion Arena and another 25,000 at a former Air Force base in San Antonio.
The Red Cross is caring for 75,000 people in 275 shelters across nine southern states.

Your help is greatly appreciated

Joe, I salute your idea and initiative. Wonderfull!

And the idea of the flower and water drops - amazing!

Bravo!

Good thought and message of prayer for those affected by the calamity. My thought are with you.
Your picture has nice soft colours. The drops and flower beside the lit candle has a good effect. TFS

Nice moment,well captured.
Good work.Regards,

Well said, Joe. This tragedy has hurt many people - your picture is a poignant reminder to us all.

Poignant image you present for those of us who were in the path of the reportedly worse disaster to hit our coast lines. I live a little over 100 miles from where the eye of this monster hit, and our damage was disasterous in our area. Our beaches, towns and homes were destroyed last year when hurricane Ivan made a direct landfall on Gulf Shores, AL, 10 miles from my home so we were in fragile condition already.
Your message was good and to the point. We have begun accepting as many of the displaced people that our limited shores will permit.
Thank you for the thought and the message from one who has been forever changed by this event of nature.......:O)

Hi Joe

An informative note. The blue backdrop & yellow flower make a good color contrast. Well done!
