I recently took a cruise to Mexico and visited several beaches on the east coast of Cozumel.

Here is a bit of the history of Cozumel. The Maya are believed to have first settled Cozumel by the early part of the 1st millennium AD, and older Preclassic Olmec artifacts have been found on the island as well. The island was sacred to Ix Chel, the Maya Moon Goddess, and the temples here were a place of pilgrimage, especially by women desiring fertility. There are a number of ruins on the island, most from the Post-Classic period. The largest Maya ruins on the island were bulldozed to make way for an airplane runway during World War II. The ruins of San Gervasio are located approximately at the center of the island and are the largest remaining ruins.

The first Spanish visitor was Juan de Grijalva in 1518, and in the following year Hernán Cortés came with a fleet and destroyed many Maya temples. Some 40,000 Maya lived on the island then, but smallpox devastated them and by 1570 only 30 were left alive. In the ensuing years Cozumel was nearly deserted, used as a hideout by pirates from time to time. In 1848, the Caste War of Yucatán resulted in resettlement by refugees escaping the tumult. A plaque at the Museo Cozumel states Abraham Lincoln as U.S. president was close to purchasing the island of Cozumel as a place to send the freed slaves. The continued war in the Yucatan forced him to change his mind.

Cozumel’s East Coast Beaches are spectacular. They are on the open ocean and the entire eastern shoreline gets pounded with surf year around. Over the years, this had created some huge beaches that enjoy a good amount of deep, fine coral sand. The clouds that come in from the open ocean tend to drift across the island and pile up on the western side, so there is an excellent chance that the eastern beaches will be hot and sunny, even if the western beaches are cloudy and overcast as they were when we visited.

Cozumel was hit by hurricane Wilma and a lot of damage was done, but as you can see the beaches are wonderful. The island is small about 48 km (30 miles) north-south and 16 km (10 miles) east-west, and is the largest island of Mexico. It is about 20 km (12 miles) from the mainland, and some 60 km (36 miles) south of Cancún. Nearly everybody in Cozumel lives in the town of San Miguel (pop. 71,401 in 2005), which is on the western shore. The rest of the island is low, flat, and densely vegetated.

Hello Fran,
This photo is making me dream of sunshine and warm weather eapecially with the -15c that we have outside. Your composition is excellent and I like how you've capture de details and texture of that beautiful white sand.
Greetings.
Luc

Hi Fran,

Looks like a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the sun! Good POV and warm lighting!! It was quite windy, heh??

Very well captured and presented!
Constantinos

Hello Fran!

Welcome back . Glad to see you back on line. Indeed the colotrs are a bit pale, the sand is so white it does look like snow (^_^). Looking at the palm tree , it was quite a windy day. The sun bathers were hiding that day, as the p[lace look completely deserted.

Great idea to keep the beach sign at the far left .

Cheers!
Robert

Next time let me know upfront ok?
This is a place where I also would love to make a booking ^_^ TFS

Cruising eh!!.. woweeee.... but!.. you deserve it with all your hard work of late... Hope you had a great time Fran.

I like the colour of the sky, and the swaying of the trees that you captured here Fran, umm I think I would have just cropped a little off the foreground.. and then it brings the photo closer for the viewer, and make more of an impact of this lovely image..

Thanks for sharing.

Kind regards
Dawn.
