The “El Castillo” or the Great Castle at Tulum. Standing on a tall cliff on the edge of the Caribbean sea, the walled Mayan city of Tulum was the site that greeted the Spanish sailors that arrived off the Yucatan coast in early 16th century, who were surprised to find a fully functional “modern” city.

Tulum was also the last of the great Maya cities with the larger population centers at places like Chechin Itza and Uxmal have been abandoned many centuries before. Today it stands above an incredibly beautiful stretch of beach, a monument to the sophisticated but very violent Mayan society of the post-classical period.

This view of the ruins of El Castillo with the blue ocean in the background has appeared on many Mexican tourist posters.

Hi Sunil

I like the turquoise colour of the water. The old ruin on the bg hill makes a fine centre of interest. Good sharpness & framing. Tfs!

hello sunil

Even though I think the focus sharpness lacks a bit here, the composed view is great to show the attractive beach with such a good water color to contrast with the blue sky.

Good choice of POV. A lovely shot.

Happy 2009 to you.

tfs, bill
