This is the main pyramid at Chichen Itza, the magnificent Mayan city from the classical period (250 to 900 AD). Maya society was a primarily agrarian one, and given that Yucatan peninsular lacks surface water, was heavily dependent on the rain. So it is not very surprising that the Mayans would worship a rain god. Chichen Itza was primarily devoted to their rain god Chaac.

Chichen Itza is also the location of the famous ball court, where they played a game which was a combination of soccer and basket ball in which a rubber ball had to be thrown through rings set high up on the sides of the court without using ones hands. One difference to the modern sports was that the winner was sacrificed to the gods after the game. Not the losers but the winner – only the best for the god of course!.

Chichen Itza was declared one of the 7 wonders of the world in 2007 after a world wide competition. It displays the Mayan architectural skills, their vast knowledge of astronomy and mathematically precise calendars.

Nice design of the architecture. Fantastic formation of the clouds. Blue sky background looks great.
May you have a happy 2009!

Nice view Sunil, although I think that the contrast is probably a little too high. You can see that from the 'halo' around the pyramid.
Very interesting scene though..

hi Sunil
i lkie this shot very much nice capture maybe i would have cropped the white path out it takes the eye away from the pyramid a little but thats just my opinion
regards bryan

Hi Sunil

A good capture of the old Mayan pyramid. The people in the mid-ground add good scale. Excellent colour. Maybe I'd burn in the clouds a bit? Have a great 2009!

hi sunil

Very nice shot of the pyramid that has been posted by others on TE and your version has a clear space in front even though placed in center. I agree about the tone, the saturation and contrast is pushing off the natural look of this scenery.

If I undo -25 contrast and -30 saturation level, perhaps it would look better.

Hi Sunil,
What a spetacular monument, very appropriately titled. What's the PP work here? Makes the pyramid look even more impressive. The clouds also seem to be on fire. Great shot.

Ciao Sunil, happy new year to you, great view of fantastic architecture with wonderful light and colors, superb sky, very well done, ciao Silvio

Well managed metering of this scene, and good PP work to darken the sky and surrounds of the pyramid.

Hi Sunil,
Happy New Year!
You bring back good memories to me. I visited the site of Chichen Itza in 1996, a wonderful place. Excellent vivid colours but a bit too soft in my opinion. Anyway you captured this impressive building quite well.
Hans

Ciao Sunil

Hi Sunil

This is somewhere I would love to go. You have photographed this pyramid well. Wonderfully composed, excellent focus and good exposure

hello Sunil,

Magnifique bâtisse, et superbe lumière, c'ets une très belle composition.
Bonne soirée
Marie

I think the most impressive aspect of this one is the vivid colors. Inclusion of the people add proportion for the viewer.
Two things: the with walkway in the FG is a distraction for me and there seems to be a glow along the left edge of the piramid. Not sure where that came from.
