Maya art

This is a detail of a silver plated platter which I bought in Valladolid in the Mexican Yucatan. The platter itself is pure fake and hasn’t any financial value except from the twenty five dollars I paid for it and which was probably twenty dollars too much! The platter is part of my parafernalia all the absolutely useless bits and pieces a bought for far too much money I like to see happy faces you know! And I can assure you this Mexican merchandiser who sold me this phoney platter as authentic Maya Art is using this commercial victory as example for his children and grand children how to rip a stupid Dutch tourist. But as I already wrote; I like happy people.

So if you think this is ancient Maya art.…forget it! But I like the whole picture I hope you too.

Regarding the picture it’s more or less a marco image I didn’t use flash and although is a silver colour plated the final appearance is goldish. In the WS you find the picture of the whole platter and is the origional one used for this posting.

Maya Art
Many consider Maya art of their Classic Era (c. 200 to 900 AD) to be the most sophisticated and beautiful of the ancient New World. The carvings and stucco reliefs at Palenque and the statuary of Copán are especially fine, showing a grace and accurate observation of the human form that reminded early archaeologists of Classical civilization of the Old World, hence the name bestowed on this era. We have only hints of the advanced painting of the classic Maya; mostly what have survived are funerary pottery and other Maya ceramics. Also a building at Bonampak holds ancient murals that survived by serendipity. With the decipherment of the Maya script it was discovered that the Maya were one of the few civilizations where artists attached their name to their work.(text Wikipedia.com)

It might be fake, but it makes a great picture! Great shades, textures and light and shadow play with a well-thought-out frame.
