From the Indianapolis Whitewater Gardens.
I have been trying all summer to catch this bloom in the white phase. This is the first year for these Amazon hybrid giant water lilies at the garden. Standard lily pads are in the right foreground for comparison. I was there when the gardener measured the lily pad largest diameter at 54 inches. They are night bloomers and the next phase is a hazy purple bloom. My previous posting shows both common lilies ant the Giant Victorian as well as a second phase bloom. If you search Amazon lilies on the web you will find pictures of the pad supporting the weight of an infant. The pads themselves are lined with thorns on their undersides to prevent fish and others from nibbling on them.
