This photo was recently posted on TrekNature, but I decided to pull all my photographs off of that web site because too many of them were considered, "inappropriate" by one individual. Therefore I hope to present a lot of those images here on TrekLens where, hopefully, they will be more appreciated.
This great eagle was caught taking off from its perch in the middle of the fossil beds of the Ohio River. Apparently it was quietly awaiting a meal in the small bed of water just below the wooden perch. I think this may have been the same eagle I shot four years later on the river banks close to the same location.
A short history of the fossil beds: Across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky lies one of the largest naturally exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world. More than 500 species of coral, birds and fish are fossilized on the banks of this urban location that nearly 400 million years ago was an inland sea. These fossil beds display some of the most impressive natural wonders in the world. The eroding action of the Ohio River exposed a wide bed of limestone that was formed in the middle Devonian age. This huge bed of rock is the remains of the floor of a former tropical ocean. The ocean originally existed far to the south, but the shifting of the earth's tectonic plates moved what is presently Indiana north to its present position. This ancient ocean floor contains visible remains of a wide variety of undersea creatures that once lived there. But instead of viewing these fossils as simply dead remnants of the past, we can use them as a stepping stone into a lively ancient world. The 400-million-year-old fossil beds are among the largest naturally exposed, easily accessible Devonian fossil beds in the world. It was formerly a coral-sponge patch reef. This magnificent phenomenon of our earth’s history is in the bed and banks of the Ohio River and are best exposed late summer to late autumn. |

Daggone, Joe, what a shot!!
Absolutely amazing to catch that eagle in full flight and get such extraordinary detail. Outrageously good composition with the bridge crossing on a diagonal in the back and all that great depth. Even if you cropped the bridge it would still be a mad good shot. Super note, too. VERY well done! Many thanks and kind regards,
Shelly
Sorry Joe,
I tried to convince myself but it does not work for me. How could that bird leave a reflection in the water but no shadow? I see the light coming from the right and leaving clear shadows of the perch and the rock in the water.
How could the reflection of the bird extend onto the ground? Looks like the bird has been cloned, faded out and reversed into position, but the angle of reflection is not possible.
I took the picture out of the site and I turned it upside down and it does not look realistic neither.
I'm not sure of what it is but I do not think that the eagle was on that perch.
I don't believe it.
A great shot with the eagle well placed and a terrific background for the image. The sky is a touch hot but is worth if for the good detail in the bird. A great image. TFS
