This is a very nice divot. It's produced when striking the ball with a wedge of different degree lofts. Fuzzy Zoeller, a well known professional golfer, once said that the biggest improvement an amateur golfer could make would be to strike the ball first before the ground. Striking the ball first will yield more velocity and spin. It will pinch the ball against the turf and create a nice divot like this. The spin is desired to stop the ball on the green. The forward flight movement of the ball will be stopped by the spin stopping the ball or backing it up once it lands on the green. Many factors go into how far the ball will back up, but it is a desired effect. It's beautiful!

This is an iron shot stopped at the described impact zone. As New Zealand Jack, describes in his self produced impact shot posted last night, describes the club head speed in a golf swing. This club-head was travelling ~100mph. The club has impacted the ball and continued its downward driving force into the turf removing a nicely plowed divot. I was lucky to capture the ball in the shot.

If you really have a golf question, ask New Zealand Jack or Kentucky Joe. I'm just a hacker. My swing speed is more like driving through a school zone.

Thanks Jack and Joe!

Dennis

Hey Dennis,

This is a challenging shot, and I don't know what shutter speed you would need to both freeze the club, yet blur the ball and divot. The timing looks just about right on this, so maybe increasing the depth of field is what's needed. Just a guess, but maybe you could bump the ISO to 800 and try an aperture of 8 or maybe smaller (f/10)?

Best regards,
Werner

Hi Dennis,
You have done exceptional well to get this shot, The timing is spot on - it shows how fast the ball is traveling when its blurred at 1/1600 sec.
It certainly is a great strike on the ball
well done
Jack

Hi Dennis
Great timing and good movement. The yellow line is a bit distracting but it could be cloned out.

Dennis,

Wow! Is this a lucky shot or what? I can certainly do this capture but you have to swing your club a thousand times!
I love Action shots. Very nice picture !!

Joey

Dennis, thanks for the plug! But I must be honest on my critique on this photo. Forget the frame! It's nice is one wants to print and past the photo into a photo album. Also, the yellow line through the photo should have been cloned out. It doesn't add anything to the photo and actually detracts from the excitement of the image. See comparison.

Your blurred action creates a wonderful effect here. The color enhancement also creates the "mood" for this photo. Overall I praise this photograph, but without the frame and yellow line! A+1 Excellente.

aaaaaaand ACTION!!!!

This sure is fun Dennis. I really like this shot.
I'm not a fan of this framing, but it seems to suite the shot very well.
Good timing!

Cheers,
Anneke
