[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On July 17th, 1981, exactly 25 years ago as this photo is being posted, approximately 2,000 people had gathered in the atrium of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri to participate in and watch a dance contest, including hundreds packed onto the walkways. At 7:05 PM, the walkways on the second, third, and fourth floor were packed with visitors as they watched over the active lobby, also full of people. The fourth floor bridge was suspended directly over the second floor bridge, with the third floor walkway set off to the side several meters away from the other two. Construction issues led to a subtle but flawed design change that doubled the load on the connection between the fourth floor walkway support beams and the rods carrying the weight of the second floor walkway. This new design could barely handle the dead load weight of the structure itself, much less the weight of the spectators standing on it. The connection failed and both walkways crashed onto the lobby, killing 114 people and injuring more than 200 others. I was one of the area paramedics who participated in the rescue effort. It was a night we always will remember. I did this photo a few months ago and posted it in memory of all those lives that were lost and changed that fateful night...twenty-five years ago.

Nice composition with this one. Nice to have some of your thoughts to go with the photo. Behind all photos there is usually a story. While this was not a pleasurable memory, and one you will never forget, it's nice to have something tangible to document events. The only suggestion I could make would be to "burn" in a shadow on the edge of the building so that it would not blend into the clouds in the beautiful blue sky. Linda
