[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this on a recent photo safari at the St. Louis Zoo. The light had gotten pretty bright and contrasty, but I caught this guy in the shade. This White Pelican has his full breeding plumage and colors going on here. To attrach a mate for breeding, the bird enhances his coloring, and grows longer feathery plumage, along with the plate on his upper bill.

White Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Description - This huge bird reaches heights of 55-70 inches. It is white with a long, flat, bright orange bill and black tipped wings. During the breeding season a short, yellowish crest appears on the back of the head and a horny plate appears on the upper mandible.

Distribution - The breeding pelican is found from Mackenzie, British Columbia south to northern California. Wintering grounds are from central California, the Gulf Coast, and Florida south to Panama. They prefer shallow lakes to coastal lagoons.

Biology - This pelican is gregarious, usually travelling in flocks and nesting in colonies. 1-6 white eggs can be found on a low mound of earth and debris. They do not dive for food but cooperate to surround fish in shallow water where they scoop them into their pouches. In recent decades the number of pelicans has dropped drastically because of the use of pesticides, human disturbance and the draining of wetlands.

Wonderful photo! Your visit with the zoo is worth you still a great capture. This pelican bursts the screen with its proud pose and its strongs and luminous colors. Excellent composition emphasing the nozzle. Cyrano of Bergerac could have been inspired some! :) Well done Scott! Annie

Wonderful! Fabulous clarity and colors, I've never seen a pelican during mating season. Of course down here we have mainly the brown pelican, it's the state bird. For a while they were declining but are now on the come back! This is a great photo, tfs, Scott,
Fran

Well done, and TFS,

Scott,
The detail of the eyes is great. I particulalrly like the feathers, making this pelican look like a 1960's hippie. Great detail in the shadows and highlights in the feathers is very nice. Colors on it's bill with the black near the tip gives it good depth. Look at that hook for a beak tip! I betcha that'll pierce a fish!
Great job Scott, an outstanding image!
Scott

Great lines in this one Scott. It's good that you were able to keep the detail in the whites which is not always easy to do. Funny title too.

Cheers

Joe
