Hows this for some electric colors!!!!!

This male peafowl (Peacock) was doing his best to show off for the ladies, and also to try and intimidate another male. He was not having much luck, but he sure looked good. Another shot from the St. Louis Zoo. This was a hand held shot with no fill flash.

The backround was pretty distracting, so I zoomed in and tight cropped to concentrate on the most colorful composition I could make of it.

Peafowl

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

The Blue (or Indian) Peafowl has been kept and reared in captivity for over 2000 years. Although no signs of domestication such as changes in shape or size have ever occurred, two or tree mutations have developed. One mutation, known to occur frequently among birds bred in captivity, is the White Indian peafowl.

Peafowl are ground feeding birds with moderately strong legs. Three strong toes face forwards and one backwards. While they nest on the ground, they prefer to roost in the trees. Their wing surface to bodyweight ration is not large and most species are incapable of long flights.

DISTRIBUTION:

Peafowl are native to southern India and Ceylon.

BEHAVIOR:

In its homeland, India, where it may still be found wild in the jungles, the peacock is both popular and useful in that it feeds on young cobras. It utters an unpleasant wailing cry, especially before a rainfall.

Peafowl are quarrelsome and do not mix well with other domestic animals.

Hi Scott
Although I have taken a number of shots of these guys displaying, their colors never cease to amaze me. Nice crisp capture and excellent composition. Interesting that they feed on young cobras - handy to have around.

10/10 need I say more?
Christine.

Top notch shot Scott. The tight crop is excellent. Almost looks like a high quality painting. "Electric" is a great description of the colours.

Joe

Hi there Scott.. this is very beautiful..you were lucky to get such a display.. the colours and patterns are stunning..

We have a few Peacocks and hens, not far from me, at the Shakespear Regional Park, roaming free, where I sometimes go and take photos...Im scared of them !..they always follow you around..looking for food, and seem rather cheeky..but I have never been able to get a photo with their feathers up.

Thank you for your interesting information.

Kind Regards
Dawn.

Scott.
Very good shot. Colours are wunderful.
Well done.
