Inflation Anticipation

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This shot was taken at the Balloon Glow on the evening before the Great Forrest Park Balloon Race. The evening before the race they inflate about 60 balloons just before dark. They keep them tethered to the ground and sound a horn about every 10 minutes. At the horn, all the pilots hit their burners and light up their balloon in the dark. It is a pretty amazing scene. There were about 15,000 people standing around to see this event. This shot is a dusk as they are starting to inflate the balloons.I'll post my favorite night shot of the lighted balloons next. This was actually my favorite shot of that evening.
To be an excellent photographer you must master the light. Then you need a really good composition. If you do these first two things very well, you can make just about any subject look good. Understand every function of your camera and how it will affect the final result. Get off the automatic mode and learn to do it manually. I could only achevie this result from alot lot of practice and failures as I learned. I only had about 10 seconds to get this shot. |

To be an excellent photographer you must master the light, RIGHT !
Then you need a really good composition, RIGHT
Get off the automatic mode and learn to do it manually..if one understand his/ her camera he can do in any MODE.
how it has affect the final result, is good.
Very well spotted, Scott - very nice scene.
Imagination, quick wits and reaction - most impressive.
Hello Scott,
Definitely a different balloon image!
Well composed and with interesting symmetry...
Low light but the colours came through all right, I like to see the activity around!
Greetings,
Pablo -
Great reflex!
Have a great day,
Carla
Scott,
I understand the difficulty of this shot because I was there. It was crowded, we arrived after 25,000 people had already been there, we were so close to everything to get a real good shot off. It was hot and muggy, we had walked a mile or so to arrive at this spot. I guess what I am saying is, I was there and there was only a couple of seconds the whole night to capture a shot like this and you nailed it, my wife reminds me I was standing in the bathroom line! She remembers you taking this shot and she laughs and says that is the difference between a good photographer and a great one, patience. I guess I should have held it! Anyway, I really think this is a great picture and I enjoyed seeing it enlarged in your ARTEAST exhibit last month. It's a real beauty. The reflection is perfect and the composition couldn't be any better. I bet Purina would want a print of this to hang in their conference rooms. I also strongly agree with your advice to get off the automatic mode and explore and experiment with aperture priority, shutter priority and manual modes. It has helped me and may possibly be the biggest piece of advice you have ever given me. Without that advice I am sure I'd still be frustrated and in the auto mode.
Very well done and thanks for posting this.
Scott

Hi Scott,
Amazing photo and not an bit of wind! Perfect for the balloon race. Your note is wonderful and I love the last part... After joining this site I did the following.. 1 after reading somewhere to read the manual I did.. and 2 I took it off automatic... We just purchased our 12 year old and cannon and I have not told her about automatic mode and she will not sit and read the manual.. win some lose some! :)
sorry for the blah blah blah! toooo much Turkey! :)
