This was shot at the St. Louis Zoo. I really liked this shot for the color and detail I was able to get in the plumage, yet keep the backround water dark.
I did add on my 1.4 extender to reach him as he napped out in the lake in a shady spot. So that is why it shows 280mm focal length. Hand held shot, but the image stabilized lens makes all the difference here. They are worth every penny of the extra cost.

Caribbean Flamingo

Class: Aves
Order: Ciconiiformes
Family: Phoenicopteridae

There are six species of flamingos. The Caribbean – a subspecies of the greater flamingo -- is the most brightly colored and the most widely distributed.
By eating blue-green algae, flamingos help control the algae level in many wetlands.
The only obvious difference between the sexes is size – the male flamingo is somewhat larger than the female.
It’s not a myth – flamingos actually DO stand on one leg. It seems to be a comfortable resting position.
Flamingos are long-lived. In the wild, they can live to 40 years old; in captivity they’ve been known to reach 60.

Great pink color against the black background. The capability of the lens really shows in this photo. I like the details.TFS.

Hi Scott,
A realy wonderful capture. The contrast between the dark water and BG against the colorful plumage of the flamingo is excellent. It really helps to bring out the bird from its surrounding. I really love the details and the warm colors. It looks like this fellow is about to fall asleep.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Scott,

I find this shot very good. The color and texture of the flamingo really came out. TFS.

Konie

Cool flamingo shot, the deep rich colors of the feathers is beautiful, you caught a nice relaxed pose. Almost as if it is saying.. This is my best side... Good clairty of detail, I didn't realize you had an IS lens. Those must be awsome. You have some great shots of the wildlife from the parks and zoos. The lighitng in this shot is also good. The dark BG really makes the birds colors pop, good choice.

Hello Mr. Evers :)

This is a beautiful shot! Those colors are really contrasted and details are awesome. We can almost feel the smooth texture of the feathers. This dark BG is much appropriated and I like this composition and lightning. This is a sophisticated post! Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Scott,

This is a striking good picture. The composition, colours all put together in a fine image. The composition of the flamingo is superb, National Geographic would be please to plublish this excellent photo my friend! :)

:) Later...

I always admired these shots. Then I tried to take one. Now I admire them even more. Well posed and exposed.
Mike
P.S. Thanks for the tip on the stabilized lenses. Lately I've been lusting for 400mm, but the stabilization helps my cost estimate (unlikely).

Scott,
Knowing from experience your right abut the lens. I think my camera misses your lens! :) (Hope that didn't sound funny)
I like this composition of the napping flamingo.
I can almost guess your exact spot that you shot this from.
You always leave great notes!
Thanks for teaching me so much about photography.
Your Buddy,
Scott

Lovely photo Scott, amazing how they stand on one leg !...only time I ever saw some of these was when I was in Las Vegas, staying at the Flamingo Hilton.. they have lots of them walking around in the grounds..

Looks great with the dark BG.. well done.

Thanks for sharing.
Dawn.

WOW!!!! A fantastic photo of the flamingo, Scott!!! Its colours are so vivid and contrast nicely with the dark background!

Very well seen and captured!
Constantinos

Hi again, Scott - I do like your nature shots! The combination here of strong red on dark brown is rather effective. And the bird is a natural model. Thank you for sharing this impression. Cheers, Cordelia :)
PS: Do you have any idea how these birds can pull one leg up so high and keep it there? And then nap at the same time?

Bonjour.
Splendide flamand rose... sur ce fond noir, la rose est magnifique (ni trop vif ni trop foncé).
