[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was taken at an indoor exhibit of Orchids at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis, Missouri. They allow photography, but no tripods or monopds allowed. The walkways are narrow and crowded so they do not allow photographers to use them inside. The ceiling has glass panels, but it was a very cloudy and grey morning. The light for hand held work was not good. I found this composition which allowed me to meter the orchids and allow the backround to go black.

A recent forum centered on quality lenses and Imagine Stabilization. This is why you save your money and buy the very best lenses. When conditions force you to work in low light without the use of support, IS means the difference in getting quality shots. This was hand held at 1/40. I tried my Canon 180mm L series macro several times and even boosted the ISO to 800, but could not get sharp enough shots without a tripod or the benefit of IS. In my opinion it is worth every penny. It is not perfect, but I think it turned out OK for the conditions I was forced to shoot in.

Very delicate and peaceful image, Scott - well composed and good detail. The pink and black compliment each other wonderfully well.

Simply a great shot - well done.

Very delicate, good capture of nice colours and texture of the petals. The background fits so well but I'm not sure about the angle, maybe on the other side you could have a complete view of three blossoms.

Hi Scott,

I love this composition. Simple yet very good. I agree with you on your notes on the lens. It is absolutely true. I myself have experienced a lot of times the power of the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM. True that it is expensive but the quality of output compensates. Thanks for sharing the photo and the notes.

I liked this one the best from your emails. It has a superb BG and it stands out so well. Perfect isolation. The colors are dramatic and coming in from the side of the frame makes it unique. This will look GREAT amoung your other shots in your portfolio. Very different from the others, yet still superb!
