Chain Chain Chain - Chain Of Rocks
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I'd just received my new (to me) 18-200 VR zoom lens the day before I took this photograph, and I had not successfully tried out the Promote GPS unit my wife got me for Christmas (didn't know you had to turn it on!), so I gathered up my gear and my dog, got in the 1999 Chevy Silverado truck I hardly drive anymore (hey, gas is cheap again!) and headed out to take some photographs, try out the new stuff. The day was gloomy and cold and St. Louis is not the most scenic of cities if the sun isn't out. You have to use your imagination and pay attention to what is going on locally. There usually isn't much on a Sunday in January, but I remembered there was an event held on this old, abandoned bridge over the Mississippi called "Eagle Days". Every year, hundreds of bald eagles winter over near the shores of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, with a large concentration of them at the confluence of those rivers. The Chain of Rocks Bridge is not far south of there. You can see a natural exposure of bedrock in the Mississippi River north of St. Louis that forms a remarkable "chain of rocks" across its width off the south side of the bridge. This formation attracts plenty of water fowl and raptors as the fish are exposed when navigating the rocks.
The Eagle Days was almost over when Sophie (my dog) and I arrived, so I talked to the ranger a bit about the eagles and we walked about half-way over the bridge. For some reason the bridge made Sophie nervous, so we didn't walk the whole thing.
This bridge was part of Historic Highway Route 66 until it was closed in 1968. It was re-opened for pedestrian traffic in 1999.
I increased the saturation and contrast in the camera and used about a -1.3 exposure compensation in Vivid mode. The D300's Active D-Lighting was set to high, which lightens up the shadows considerably. I used the shadow and highlight tool in PS CS2 to lighten them up a bit more, too. I wanted to get some definition of the cloudy sky, not that solid light gray mass that usually appears if you don't pay attention to it. I kind of wish I hadn't posted another shot I got this day already, because it would fit better here. It is an abandoned gas station on old Route 66 on the Illinois side of this bridge. Great note - enlivens the picture. The touch of orrange is special here. One niggle... the contrast seems to be on wee higher side as evident from the halo appearing next to the spans. TFS

A very nice POV. I like the colors, light and the composition. TFS.
Best wishes, Carme.
Bien pour cette vue, félicitation pour la symétrie de la photographie de ce pont. Les couleurs du ciel, du pont orangé.
Bravo.
