Today's Monday, got them Stormy Monday Blues...

I love blues music, have for years. I used to be somewhat fanatical about it, I have a book with several blues artist's signature in it that I used to take to shows and festivals around town and to other towns.

This was shot at the Big Muddy Blues Festival on Laclede's Landing in St. Louis, Missouri, September of 2002. This was a great festival - there were many super blues artists performing - Big Jack Johnson, Billy Boy Arnold, Little Bobby Parker, Oliver Sain, Willie Kent & Johnnie Johnson, Michael Burks Band and others.

I had seen Big Jack in Chicago on the same night I saw Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. Jack actually recognized me - I spent a little time talking to him at the Kingston Mines, a blues club in Chicago, a year before.

This used to be a fantastic festival, but unfortunately it has since lost it's Budweiser backing. They now support a more mainstream event with popular music under the Arch for several different nights over the summer. Big Muddy doesn't get the headline acts it used to. One year I saw John Mayall and the Blues Breakers (one link), and here's a link to another shot of John Mayall. These festivals were great. Security never yelled at anyone for using their camera or recording the music - the blues were coming back to the US and these artists appreciated that fact and the audience and showed it with all their heart and soul.

I used an Olympus 3030Z point 'n shoot for this photograph, it was processed in PS CS2 to blur the background and pop Big Jack out of the frame ala rintile. Roberto has been doing this with orchids, so I kind of borrowed his idea for this shot.

Hope you like it and that you survive Monday!

Hi Reed,
Interesting photo. It pleases to me idea as well as realization. Good composition, pretty colours and sharpness. I congratulate and greet.

Hello Reed,

A good portrait shot showing lots of textural and colour details.
This is certainly a time when the exploded frame works to good advantage. It gives the appearance of a advertising poster.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Reed,

This is a brilliant shot nice blur of the bg.
I like how he seems to step out of the frame.
The colours are great and the details are sharp.
I am a big follower of blues and have been since the '60s Never seen John Mayall for years but have a few of his cd's.

regards
Jon

Love this one Reed! There's nothing like a Great Blues Concert! We have them here every Sunday on the waterfront. Good fun!
You did a wonderful job on Big Jack! I like his pose...you can tell he really loves what he does! The colors are exceptional and it's a clean sharp photo! I want to hear him play!!

HI Reed
Blues music, heavenly sound for the ears.
You did an awesome job of pp.
Making the big fellow stand out of the frame as if on stage, is really professional looking worthy of a good advertising ad.
Excellent work.
Dot

This is an awesome shot Reed!! How cool!! Super sharp, I love da blues! Especially guitar! He looks SO cool! HAHA! Nice work on this! Really quality shot!

Good detail right down to his rings and the frets on the base Reed. I'm really impressed that you got this with a PNS camera. I might add that I like this type of framing - adds interest to have parts hanging out.

Dan

Good pp on this one Reed - he certainly does stand out clearly and the simple frame helps too..

I used to listen to the bands playing in Beale Street, Memphis many years ago during my year living in TN. Great music..
