This is a photograph of the great blues harp player Charlie Musselwhite. He's a Memphis guy, his blues are a little different from the Delta Blues or the Chicago Blues. A little bit jumpier, sometimes country blues influenced. He did "pay his dues" on the South Side of Chicago, however.

I've seen Memphis Charlie a couple times and have about eight of his discs, but I have never heard him do the same song twice. Even when they were the same song! He's like an ancient white rap god who comes up with lyrics and rhymes out of the air to change the mood or gist of the tune he happens to be playing. It's funny to watch all his fans (me, included) singing along to "Leavin' Blues" or "The Blues Overtook Me" and all of a sudden they are singing different words. Sometimes, everyone starts singing different words, depending upon how they last heard the song. Maybe Charlie does that on purpose, just to screw with his audience. Or maybe he's just gotten bored singing the same songs over and over. He's a harmonica genius with 14 W.C. Handy awards, a true "real deal" bluesman. If you have never seen him and you love the blues, you will want to make the effort to experience his music live. Charlie Musselwhite, along with many others, will not be around forever - he is a part of a uniquely American culture that continues to evolve, but may not be the same once he is gone.

Oh, did I say this was shot on my inherited Olympus 3030z, way back in 2002 at Blueberry Hill, a bar/restaurant/venue in University City, Missouri. Charlie played "The Duck Room", a place that some of the greatest rock n' roll and blues artists ever have played for years. If you think you are going to be in St. Louis for even only one night, you will want to check out the link to Blueberry Hill. Joe Edwards, owner and proprietor of Blueberry Hill and other fine establishments in the Loop (we call this area The Delmar Loop), will make sure you have a great time.

I've posted another, grittier shot of Charlie on TrekEarth for your viewing pleasure. With a different note, too! All my links open in a separate window, so you won't have to lose your place.

Thanks for having the blues with me this Monday!

Hi Reed - whilst I'm no fan (or generally user) of on camera flash I guess sometimes you just don't have a choice.. I guess a dark bar at night is the scene here so flash needed..
I like the compo with the name plaque in the BG, sets the scene well.. I like your music shots..

Cheers
David..
