Here's another one from our evening at the ballpark. Maybe you do have to know just a bit about baseball to appreciate it, maybe not. The guy with his leg up in the air is Colby Rasmus, one of our new "rookie" players. He is about to swing his bat at the pitched ball. I was a little quick on the draw with this one, but I like the action I got. The catcher, directly behind Colby, is from the opposing team. He is to catch the ball and perform other defensive maneuvers while behind the "plate" or "home plate", which is the starting and scoring platform for the game. Every batter starts here - if they make it all the way around three other "bases" and touch this base again, they will score a "run" or one point for their team. The guy behind the catcher is the Umpire. He referees the game. I could go on and on about baseball, most of you could probably care less, so we'll go on to more technical mattes.

I'm pretty sure I shot this with my 70 - 300, racked out to 200mm, but I had my 18-200mm with me, too, so it could have been that lens. I remember trying to get the crowd and the action all in the shot, so I most likely zoomed out to do so.

Otherwise, the image was cropped slightly for a bit better composition and then resized, sharpened and uploaded.

Thanks for looking!

Ha! I like your description of the game. I wouldn't have known where to start really .. something I've watched all my life, and can't imagine not knowing the ins and outs of the game.
And someday I hope to see a major league game. Great capture of the batter readying himself, the catcher and ump engaged and ready. You could have maybe cropped down a little more into the crowd, and not lost anything in the shot ... still, I like it.
Thanks Reed.

Hi Reed - baseball leaves me cold, to be honest, but I have to say I like this shot. Strong colours, good overall composition and a nice bit of action thrown into the mix with the raised leg of the batter. I'm surprised at home close the three main subjects are to each other. Nice shot.

Bonjour Reed.
Urs

Hi Reed

very good action capture.
I like that the photo is not just the object of your attention, in other words, you used in the composition the people in the BG that is great...

well done.

Taba

Reed
Belle scène de base ball dont j'aime le dynamisme et la composition avec les trois personnages alignés et le public en arrière plan. Très belle photo de sport!
Amicalement

Thank you very much for your comments, I thank the opportunity to visit your gallery which I consider excellent. I normally do not post photos on this website, I use more Trekeart. This is a very typical scene in your country with great handling and light exposure, you can visit your gallery more often.

Regards from Valencia, Spain.
Luis

This is a very nice shot. I have never taken shots a sporting events but I like this very much. Great colours and atmosphere. Good job

David

Reed,
Ahhhh...April in Saint Loui...
The wonderful sounds of the ghost of Jack Buck....the laugh and popping of a Nice Frosty Budweiser from Mike Shannon. The U-Man John Ulett announcing the starting line-ups.....Gosh...I'm in Baseball heaven!

As a transplant Saint Louisan (Edwardsville, actually), I find this such a familiar scene but nothing we'd ever see here in Singapore. Unlike Richard (Kilted-Arab), I love baseball and it gives me many memories dating back to the early 70's. Bake McBride, Lou Brock, Ted Simmons, Kenny Rietz, Tony Scott, George Hendrick....
Now to see the rookie Colby Rasmus batting just a few hundred feet from the old Busch Stadium (Yeah, I miss it too) is wonderful.
I think you caught the action really well with Colby's foot raised and the umpire and catcher in perfect stances. I do wonder a bit about the color of red that you've selected for the frame. I don't think it's quite "Cardinal Red" but it's respectable. I know this is picky but I might have set my camera to motor-drive and captured the ball, although traveling at nearly 95 mph (sometimes more) it would be a bit blurry.
I have some snaps from the Scott Rolen era that I've tried that with a pretty fair success rate.

Anyway, I like this photo....and I can't wait until the Blues start playing to see some of your hockey stuff....surely you like the Blues!

Well done my friend,

Scott
