The Bevo Mill
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is another of the fine sites to see in St. Louis. It is Bevo Mill. The Bevo Mill is located at the main intersection in the Bevo neighborhood -- Gravois, Morganford and Delor. The area received its name from this landmark. You could probably guess that this is the most notable structure in the area - how often do you see an old windmill at the corner of three main streets in a busy city?
I chose this pov because of the flowers and the rock wall to put in the foreground. Shooting this building from the front is problematic, especially in the morning as it faces west and there are tons of wires, street signs and a few traffic signals directly in front. Then all you really see is the front turret looking part with the vane, not the rest of it, which is impressive, too. You can see this thing was stuck together out of rocks, stucco and cement.
This was taken on my mother-in-law's birthday last year. She's a German immigrant, the Bevo had a German restaurant in it. I have to admit it was not my favorite place to go for any meal, even brunch, which is hard to screw up. It has been a restaurant for many, many years. Since about 1917. Stuff is old and dusty in there - sure it's charming, but let's clean the place up some before we start cooking food in it...
Well, now this restaurant is closed. The owners, who leased it from Anheuser-Busch for many years, allegedly bilked a bunch of people out of money for receptions and such, then closed up and left town. Like many years before, another will pop up in there. I just hope they do a better job of cleaning it up.
St. Louis does need a good German restaurant. We don't have any that I know about. We have quasi-German continental places that employ creative chefs who kind of change the original flavor of German cuisine such as spaetzle and red cabbage. It's fine if you want something like that, but I guess I will have to make sure my mother-in-law stays healthy for a long, long time so we can get the real thing!
Anyway, here's the Bevo Mill - another of my favorite places (to complain about) in St. Louis! |

Hi Reed,
Very nice perspective in your composition. I like the lead-in from the stone structure and flowers in the foreground to the mill at the end. Excellent sharpness and DOF.
