It's now the hottest part of the year here in St. Louis. For the next couple months we will have heat wave after heat wave. If we are lucky, we will get a break in between them and it won't just be a couple long, hot, sweaty periods of time. The fourth of July holiday was nice in that the heat and humidity were somewhere else, probably down in Texas with Linda (shelbeesmom).

When it gets hot here in St. Louis, many people go to this place. People still go there when it's not so hot, but when the streets are baking the treads of your sneakers off, this place attracts crowds like the opening of a blockbuster movie in Hollywood. They have to have cops direct traffic and others to watch so the crowd doesn't get out of hand.

This is Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. A St. Louis institution and one of my Favorite Places of St. Louis. They have been around in St. Louis since 1931 - this particular store has been around since 1941. There is another deeper in the city on Grand that has been there since 1931, it gets crowded, too, but nothing like this place. This one is on Chippewa - old Route 66, near the City/County border in an area called St. Louis Hills. It attracts folks from all over and no one wants to drive into the city on a hot summer night (unless there is Cardinals Baseball!).

Ted Drewes and his wife are great philanthropists here in St. Louis. They provide employment for dozens of teens every summer for the ice cream and every winter for selling Christmas trees. They have a college plan and provide scholarships to employees and they are "low key" benefactors in that you don't hear publicly all the good stuff they do, they just do it. They have a humility and good-naturedness that draws people to them.

There is only one flavor of frozen custard here. Vanilla. They put it together with sauces and nuts and other tasty treats in a way that everyone has a favorite. Their frozen custard is thick, too. You can get a sundae or a "concrete", if you hold the cup upside down, the custard will not fall out! I like a "Fox Treat" - a sundae with hot fudge, macadamia nuts and fresh raspberries. My wife likes "The Dutchman" - also a sundae with chocolate, butterscotch and pecans.

I shot this one hot and almost stormy day a couple weeks ago. We were out taking real estate photographs of one of my wife Linda's new listings and came by here. A small crowd was starting to gather, as were the storm clouds. It really gets packed late at night after the Cardinals game is over, though. They stay open until the last customer gets his custard, too! One evening I will capture that, too.

Have a nice day and stay cool!

Your wife has a nice name! HAHA! It was 107 in McAllen, 105 in Austin and 102 here in Houston this past weekend. KILLER...two people died. But we have rain today! This is nice! What caught my eye here Reed is the Blue and White combo of colors here. Love those white fluffy clouds! It's a hot one this year! What is scary, is when the heat is like this, the hurricanes fire up! I don't think I can do another Ike this year! B-)
Linda

It looks hot, most people are wearing shorts & short sleeved shirts,so the "Snow Route" sign brought a smile,Reed. The lattice on the building even looks like hanging icicle's perhaps it helps one feel a little cooler seeing them:)
I thought at first glance the name should have been Brews & that the crowd was lining up for a homemade beer:but a custard, man that has to be something special. The owners sound like great folks ,doing all that good stuff for the teenagers, wish there were more business people like them,my hat's off to them.

Hi Reed,
No doubt, the ice cream must be a true delight, there !
What grabs me, here, are the beautiful deep blue sky and the contrast with the fluffy clouds! I like this kind of photo with a so natural street scene! Excellent colors and sharpness! Bravo! Annie
