okay, this is the other end of the corridor in the horse barn from "a clean, well-lighted place."

Natural light; mid-afternoon; probably auto-mode

All I did was crop on the right to get rid of a person walking near the stairs; resized for TL in several steps (had to go down to 500 pixels width -- I'm probably doing something wrong there); and saved to web. I didn't adjust any levels or add USM.

What's a good technique for dimming the brightness of the big light patches on the floor? Thanks for any and all comments. This made an interesting b&w print.

well seen ck
Nice composition
congratulations

Wow! Well seen Ck!! This is a very interesting photo, you captured very well the feeling of the lights and the shadows. I've done a little WS for you to show you a different vision of your shot. I hope you don't mind...
Well done!!!!
Ana

shadow play, place like for me

Good example of how a simple composition can work well. I don't mind the bright spot in the middle; it creates a nice contrast. Good work!

Very nice, "atmospheric" shot, CK! I like the monochromatic, almost b&w, coloring, and your composition is very good. I don't mind the large patches of sunlight - I see them as punctuation marks within the "sentence" of more uniform lines on the floor. It's very difficult to tone down blown out highlights in post processing. It's much easier to bring out detail lost in the shadows. You can use the levels adjustment, or curves, or in Photoshop CS, the shadows/highlights adjustment tool. Let me know what application and version you're using for your post-processing, and I might be able to recommend some good references. A book that I picked up a few months ago, for example, by Scott Kelby, is an excellent resource..."The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers."

I thought that I saw it before and comment on this, but now I see I didn't. Nice POV /composition. I like the play with light and shadows. Really nice.

This barn that is so "clean and well lighted" in your other picture looks "dirty and poorly lighted" in this one. I prefer the other. I'm not seeing anything of interest here. I think the stairs could be neat looking but they are too dark to see. The wall on the left has alot of cool textures and shapes but there's not much of it showing. I know the stalls on the right are interesting looking (from your other photo) but again there is only a trace of them showing. Most of the picture is this dirty floor with the harsh lights on it. If gloom was what you were trying to capture here then you did it well. I just prefer a picture that brings joy my way when I look at it.
