The city of Grand Forks closed the second of its three bridges this morning. The Red River is flooding, and everyone is preparing for the worst.

Downtown was a unique scene today, people were everywhere, just watching the water go by. These emergency floodwalls were erected to fill the gaps in the dikes, leaving one bridge left open that leads over to Minnesota. That one will probably close by the end of the week, as waters are STILL rising, and thunderstorms are forecasted for the duration of the week past Wednesday.

In nearby Crookston, a friend had to evacuate his neighborhood, and everywhere around us, fields are flooded because of the saturated ground. They are telling us now to expect the second highest water levels in history, second only to the 'Great Flood' of 1997 that caused $2 billion in damage.

Fingers crossed. The gates are in place, there is nothing we can do but wait.

Nice shot; you should have some nice photojournalistic opportunies as events unfold. How's the 20D treating you? I should have a shiney new 5D in a couple weeks. ;-)

EDIT: DON'T GET YOUR TRUCK STUCK AGAIN!!

Hello Brian,

Excellent perspective here and those colors are just so incredible. WOW, what a system. Thanks for the very informative notes. Hope the waters do not rise any more... sorry to hear of your friend's experiences. Wishing you the best and keep us informed as any good photojournalist would :)

Love and Peace always
Kevin
