| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I have admired Bonsai trees for many years, but had no idea how they were trained. According to this gentleman, the plants are allowed to dry somewhat, losing their turgor (think limp celery). Copper wire is wrapped around the trunk onto the branch to be trained. The branch is then bent and twisted to break the lignin bonds, cracking but not fracturing the structure. The wire is then bent to its final position and the plant is allowed to recover for several months.
In the shaping process, the copper alloy work hardens and prevents the branch from returning to its original shape. The wire must be removed before too long - usually by snipping each coil - to avoid scarring the branch and trunk.
This form of bonsai is called a "raft", meaning that the actual trunk forms the base. The root structure is under the cloth on the left side and the "top" of the tree is convered on the right. The apparent trunks are really branches off the main trunk. |

Wow!You've captured him so well, and your notes are great...
Excellent!
Haaa, memories.
I grew a bonsai tree a long time ago. Got the training to dos o properly.
It is very demanding and time consuming to keep it alive.
It needs to be watered almost every day so when you go on a trip, you either get somebody to care for it or bring it along. Well, mine died...
Beautiful picture well captured.
TFS. Pierre
