This mute swan appears ready for passenger boarding. In mythology, gods, goddesses and mortals frequently took advantage of this form of transportation. Consider the following:
--Aphrodite was often pictured sitting or riding on a variety of animals, particularly birds such as swans or geese. One artifact, a mirror, has Aphrodite riding on a swan while undressing. This is appropriate for a mirror, which shows a person’s true self. The swan may represent Zeus in his swan being.
--On Sicilian coinage, circa 405-415 BC, the nymph Kamarina rides a swan swimming left.
--The literal meaning of the name Sarasvati is the one who gives the essential knowledge (Sara) of our own Self (Sva). The goddess Sarasvati is also considered the Goddess of Learning, or of education, intelligence, crafts, arts, and skills. Sometimes Sarasvati is also seen riding on a swan, the carrier of her spouse, Brahma.
--Drewatt Neate offers an Austro-Hungarian polychrome enamel pendant depicting an Arthurian knight riding on a swan's back
--German legend linked to the roman courtois cycle where the hero Lohengrin comes riding on a swan to get princess Brabante rid of her enemies.
