A recent butterfly exhibit provides an opportunity for kids to experience nature on a personal basis. A sugar solution is painted on their hands and hungry butterflies come to visit.
This is a Julia butterfly, (Dryas Iulia), that flies throughout the year in southern Florida and southern Texas, strays north in the summer.
This butterfly is the only member of its genus. It is thought to be distasteful to predators, because its caterpillars feed on poisonous passion flowers. The adults forage along a set route of nectar sources each day in a behavior known as "trap-lining".
