The one that got away
 |

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I took a series of shots this afternoon, following a couple of eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies as they fed from the purple coneflower (echinacea purpurea) blooms in our garden today. This frame shows just how quickly they can flit away when the mood strikes them and other nectar-laden flowers flaunt and beckon.
My husband shrugged his shoulders when I showed it to him (his way of saying it's a pretty boring shot and not worth five megabytes of hard drive space). I couldn't bear to just delete it without trying something fun with it, so here it is.
ISO 200, program mode, macro setting. I know the text is jagged...I didn't notice it until it was too late! I might re-do that and post a workshop.
Update: I got a much better photo of this species! See this photo. |

Oh dear!! Yes, it often happens and this can go down in your "Just Missed" files!! I have many of those...
I love these Echinacea flowers, and I know they are very popular for the butterflies and bees.
Thanks Kimberley for your sense of humour!

Hi Kimberley! It's really hard to get the desired comp when shooting animated objects, but eventhough you captured just a part of it, the framing with the very important plant (my colds supplement when I'm sensing I'm having one) and the title made a balanced composition.
TFS,
Freddie :)

I know how you feel!! Seriously..
I love butterflies, but they fly away so fast. :( Great concept, and nice colors.
Thanks for sharing,

I was most surprised when I saw that this had only received 6 points. This is a great photo. Beautiful colors, great lighting and nice touch of motion. Maybe the way the butterfly was cropped out of the photo and the size of the font is somewhat intimidating drew criticism, nevertheless I like the idea of this and especially its effects. The most important thing in a photo is that it gives the viewer and idea and here I clearly see the idea of LIFE. Life, the butterfly depends on the flower to live, it is fear for its life that it flew away when you saw you come near; the colors, the lighting all point towards sunshine, beauty...the things we cherish most in life. So, I think this is a very good, lively (haha) photo. Thanks for sharing it!
