Can You Remember the First of October?
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
As the temperature sizzles into the mid-90s here in the midwestern United States, looking back and forward to the days of autumn is more than a little inviting.
This shot was taken at the Appleton marina on the Lower Fox River in early October, one of the few picture-perfect days of autumn that we had here last year. (It was nice in late September and mid-November, but October was mostly chill and dismal, and the foliage season passed us by very swiftly).
The Lower Fox ultimately connects with Green Bay and work is in progress to restore the system of locks and canals that once made it possible to travel between the two cities entirely by boat.
The treat, I hope, is in the large post, which logged-in users will see when they click on the image. I trimmed this to fit the normal spex and keep within the 2.5:1 ratio. The large post shows the full sweep of the marina shoreline.
To start, I stitched six images together using HP ImageZone's panorama feature. A bit much probably -- and some of you know it's hard to get a consistent sky with that many images. In this case, I think the fact that it was almost high noon actually helped out.
Next, I took the saved image to The Gimp, immediately applied USM and a slight levels correction. Then I scaled to 4000 pixels, did a moderately aggressive sharpening and saved to the 400K file size.
Panos are great to do, but always a challenge. I thought I'd attempt to share as much as possible within the confines of what fits on TL. |

As i saw the bridge... my first think was about the bridge who simply fall down into water.... I just heard about this in the noon information. It's terrible!
The photo as i can focus on the good context now... please me for that mirror of water. Just some area of very small ripples and the reflection for the rest, give a good alive to the scene!
The stitching here is flawless, except for a section above the right end of the bridge. It appear that you stitched two picture in that spot. I like the view and the excellent sharpness on the image. The olours are great and give the image a nice, natural look. Beautiful place and well composed image. I am surprised that not many people have reviewed this fine work of art. Thanks JIm :-)
