The jagged rock coast of Maine is a haven for lighthouse enthusiasts, with 60 glorious sentinels dotting the beautiful shoreline. But none is more visited nor more photographed and painted than Portland Head Light, sitting regally in Casco Bay at Cape Elizabeth, the historic town south of the city of Portland and about an hour north of Boston.

Portland Head Light was first petitioned in 1786, when the District of Maine was still a part of Massachusetts. The merchants of Portland requested the lighthouse and construction was begun the following year. Lack of funding caused the building to be curtailed until George Washington became President and the Federal Government took over construction and operation of all lighthouses.

In 1789, construction of Portland Head Light was resumed when Congress appropriated $1,500 for its completion. Still, the lighthouse was built with rubble stone and brick, and the 80-foot tower outfitted with a second order Fresnel lens. With its single story keeper’s house, the first sentinel to be built on the Maine coast and the first tower to be completed by the US Government was officially placed in service in January 1791.

Hi Tom!
Amazing lighthouse. Wonderful light and colors.
Good POV, very good capture.
TFS!

Impressive POV used here. Good metering and saturation.

Interesting note too.

TFS,

Martyn

Now this really is a smasher, Tom!
Everything about it shouts sea, sea shanties and fishing!
Great pov to add stature to the lighthouse, use a leading line from the path and make your own border from the building.
The light on the tower really gives a cylindrical shape!
I love the brightness of the colours and the crispness of the details!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Tom
Lighthouses are always the most photographed when in Maine
You did a great capture with the sun shining on it,against that dark blue sky. I see that there is stil snow on the ground. What a winter we had.
Dot

Great shot and note of an over-photographed and over-painted lighthouse. (You said so in your note) I wonder why this one is the most popular? Either way a great shot, I might have to visit Maine to get my lighthouse pictures in now. TFS.

Hi Tom...I like your composition. Wonderful colors and contrasts..nicely balanced.

Hello Tom,
This is a wonderful composition, where you skilfully create this awesome feeling of depth!
My eyes are led to the ship in the horizon, as a reminder of why lighthouse was built in the first place...
Good angle of light and attractive colours!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Tom
Colors highly saturated with is a really good thing - lots of pop on my monitor. Good job dealing with the tricky building lines. The side of the lighthouse facing the sun is a bit hot. otherwise a beautiful image amd frame.
