Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)

The eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is a tree squirrel native to the eastern and midwestern United States and to the southerly portions of the eastern provinces of Canada.

The specific epithet, carolinensis, refers to the Carolinas, where the species was first recorded and where the animal is still extremely common. The native range of the eastern gray squirrel overlaps with that of the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger), with which it is sometimes confused, although the core of the fox squirrel's range is slightly more to the west.

A prolific and adaptable species, the gray squirrel has been introduced to, and thrives, in several regions of the western United States. It has also been introduced to Britain, where it has spread across the country and has displaced the native red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris.

In Ireland, the red squirrel has been almost entirely displaced and there are concerns that the same might happen in Italy.

Have a GREAT Day!!
Converted from Raw...a little saturation and Voila'

Hiya Linda

Aww what a cutie. I love the way they stand up like this, little arms hanging down as if they are tired from all that running and climbing. Nice sharp image and I like the way you have plenty of the area showing, its nice to see the full setting here. Lovely shot.

TFS regards Helen

Hi Linda

They have squirrels in Korea, too, but they're fast moving critters, & really hard to photograph, so this is a superb capture! Good sharpness, compo, & dof. Tfs!

Great shot Linda,
I like the fact that is a hill sloping upwards,
and where the squirrel is placed in the frame,
Sweet scene, great color,
Regards, Vincent

Dear Calamity,
Missed your Christmas squirrel, Ascension one and not to forget the well known Dutch Pentecost blue squirrel...Boy did you forget your medicines again? Great shot though maybe a tad to far, but I like the space for this fellah.

Hi Linder,
Ahhhh- you caught the critter. Good job on this. The trees and coloring on this are excellent. TFS Julie

Hi Linda, this is cute, he is watching you with one eye. Funny how they look at us from the side.
Nice catch!
I see you took this picture in december and you have no snow! Here we were deep to our waist in snow :))

Take care, Yan

Hi Linda,

Nice little subject, I like the compostion with the autumn leaves on the ground and branches above creating a good natural frame.

One little animal we don't get in Australia Linda except the zoos. Nice focus on the squirell with good colour and detail in te fur. The surrounds are blurred nicely and he is well positioned in the frame. TFS,
David
