[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a fountain I came across yesterday. A fountainhead is defined as "The source of water from which a stream arises." I wanted to show the water coming out of nowhere by framing it in this way. I hope I've achieved that.

"Fountains indicate and signal well-being to all. Not only that, they share their Karmic energy with all who see, hear, smell, taste and touch them. They are, and always have been, necessary for permanent settlements. We use them whenever we turn on a tap. Fountains have come to symbolize the generosity of a god, an institution or a person. They indicate abundance and ingenuity. In every culture they play a part in the mythology of life." -- Bryan R. Hirst.

I made all my changes to the photo I wanted, cropped, increased saturation, sharpened and sized it for TL. Then I selected the whole image and pasted it into a new layer in the same file. I hid this new layer.

On the bottom layer (your original photo), select a border size square within the photo and invert the selection. Fill the border with whatever color you choose. I chose black. Clear the selection.

Now going back to the top layer (the copy) and make it visible. Erase anything that you don't want to show on the bottom layer. In this case, I erased around the rocks and the top of the fountain and some of the leaves so they show outside the frame. I then merged both layers and I added a signature.

This was my first attempt at this technique which I learned here on TrekLens. I am pleased with the result, however, I was not able to figure out how to add a bevel or shadow to the black frame. If anyone can tell me how to do that in Photoshop, I would be most appreciative.

I hope you like the result.

Also, check the workshop. I did a different lighting technique. Which do you prefer?

Hi Linda,
A refrehing picture with nice vivid green colours. Although the flash is used (causing a quite harsh light, is it a fine picture overall! Interesting note too, my compliments for this posting.

Hi Linda, at first glance I wasn't sure I liked the framing but as I looked it grew on me. I really like the water falls, stream, and rocks. Good composition. Wonderful colors and a nice clear and crisp picture. The greens really set it up. Good work, thanks.
