I had to see for myself, today, what had become of my beloved beaches. I was not prepared for what I saw.....

Our Governor, wisely, has declared us under Marshal Law for looting and theft has become rampant. Looters fill their black garbage bags with items from the shelves of damaged stores, daring to show themselves in broad daylight, running away with as many items as they can carry....some have guns....

In New Orleans, looters have become snipers using our policeman for target practice. I have heard of one confirmed death of a police officer in the line of duty by a looter.

My Paradise is a mess. Instead of tourist in brightly colored halter tops and shorts walking our streets, Military Hummers with armed guards securely holding loaded automatic weapons patrol our streets.

It felt very much like a military zone of war...but the contrast was all wrong. I try to show this in my post today of the mighty Hummer and the armed guard and loaded weapen against the backdrop of a delicate and lovely brilliant Southern hotel across the street from our now closed beach.

I waved sadly to the soldiers and they grimly waved back to me.

It was more than a gentle SandPiper could bear. I sorrowfully returned to the sanctuary of my home with a heart that had turned up side down.....

My gosh, Kathleen, you really are under siege. We saw the images on television of your area, and the looting going on. I saw some footage of people taking the whole store racks with goods, a very shocking image.

All the best to you and yours, Kathleen

Marleen

The worst of events is supposed to bring out the best in people. Ignore the looters and look towards to those that are doing good like these soldiers and that police officer. As they are out there helping even while they have similar experiences within their families.

I hope all goes well and paradise returns quickly. May you and your family be safe until then, hopefully you'll start to find photos of paradise found.

I like the composition and contrast, maybe a little more forground and background. great though sad note

Keep smiling Sandpiper.

I think the hurricane Katrina has devistated us all. The coverage on our Canadian TV is very extensive. People are looting in New Orleans to steal food for their families as they have nothing. Their lives are shattered. Very nice journalistic shot of the hummer and the soldiers. Glad to hear only your roof got damaged, and that you all are okay.

Hi Kathleen

It's a shame that natural disasters often bring out both the best, & worst in people, simultaneously. 'Looters will be shot' signs, appeared after Cyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin, in Australia, in 1974. At the same time, people all over Australia, offered their homes as temporary accomodation during the reconstruction of the city. The army & military maintained civil order, much like your photo, which is a stark photojournalistic shot.

Don't despair. The shock will soon wear off, & life will be back to normal before you know it.

Hi Kathleen,

I see on tv,all you say in your note.Is in this hours,we see the best and worse in the people. But,step by step the life continues.
Great photo and great note.
Fernando,

(sorry my poor english)

As if it is not bad enough to have natural disasters, people seem to thrive on victimizing each other by looting and price gouging! No wonder martial law is needed! Thieves should be "in season"! A great presentation of a sad situuation. May God be with those who were so unfortuate. Thank goodness there are those willing to sacrifice and help.

A tragedy all that, I hope that the world will be better soon for you....

Kathleen, thank you for sharing with us first hand a tragedy in the tragedy. That is a superb reportage photo.
We have lost the respect and the sense of sacredness of our fellow man.
Hope everything will soon go back to normal, the whole world is feeling for you.

Interesting write up. We're thinking of all of you there. You've captured something of the stark contrast with normality here.

We are all seeing these scenes on our television screens across the world... its terrible..that these things happen after great disasters...

Thank you for sharing your photo Kat...
Our thoughts are with you...

kind regards
Dawn.

Hi Kat,
What a sad picture. The storm has seemed to bring out the worst in some people, but, it's in the case, I think most of it is out of desparation and survival. There's so many people without any means to take care of themselves or their families now. But, an event like this also brings out the best...as there's so many people trying to help out. And the guards...try not to see them as soldiers in a war...they're trying to keep everything under control from the craziness out there. Looking closer, I think the driver was smiling at you when you took this shot. Things will get better one day...just takes time.
Take care.
Richard

Hi Kathleen, I am sorry to see all what is happening these days to your country. I haven't seen any other pictures like this on trekearth or here. A very good photojournalist photo, very impressive and an informative note.
Hope everything goes back to a more normal situation soon, regards and take care, Iris

Kat, take care, and know that I am praying for you.
Well composed picture, your note brings tears to my eyes....be safe my friend.

What we see on the news taunts our imagination, Kat :(. I'm not just talking about the looters - I can imagine that people that are desperate for food can't help but getting food where it is to be found... especially if help takes a long time to get to them - if it comes at all.
As your president said today: "results are unacceptable". I can understand the need to deploy the armed forces to support the police. I can't understand the lack of co-ordination of the different authorities on the part of providing for emergency help, though - especially not in the USA.
I also can't understand why it takes so many countries such a long time to offer logistic support to your country...
I know you love Mother Nature, but she sure has played some nasty tricks the last year.
I think this shot has a good journalistic value. (And I can't see any nit-picks). TFS.

As for Foley, I hope Katrina didn't cause as much damage as Ivan did. Take care.
