[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Pensacola, Florida is not far from here. I went over to view the damage from hurricane Ivan to the beautiful sugar beach coastal area today for the first time. As most of you know, Ivan hit our shores here at a Catagory 4 with winds upwards to 140 mph four months ago, September 16, 2004. There was much saddness in 2004 and my purpose here is not to bring up the sad part, but to let you know how progress is coming and how the spirit of the people has rebounded in the past four months in Pensacola. Their damage was more extensive than ours.
I have taken some photos and hope to show one each day for a while that I found of interest.
This one today is one of the most inspiring to me and shows how we deal with trauma with thankfulness and also with humor....
This home is/was on the beach. The Red Cross went in as soon as they could to check on the people who "rode out the storm"...They put a special mark on each building they checked, this one being dated Septemter 18.
I would love to get to know the person who lived here. In bold letters he has declared to all who see that though he has lost everything he owned, he has his life and he has proudly written "I LIVE" in the X mark. This person knows how to laugh and how to create laughter. He is a person who loves everything about life and waste no time complaining or wishing that things were different. He lives now, not in the past. He refuses to worry, has declared for all to see he is alive and well and living in the present. He is an inspiration to me and I hope I can learn from these two words amid total chaos "I LIVE" to not be afraid to fail and to accept things as they are. I want to live. I will not chase after happiness. I will live and happiness will find me.....

Tech:
1. I used this particular frame to simulate the way a hurricane looks. It was the closest I could come and hope you like it..
2. Original photo.
3. Only needed to adjust contrast and brightness and then flattened and locked onto a canvas that was sized for the web.
4. Put simple frame around canvas, and applied signature.

and what lies
before us are
tiny matters
compared to what
lies within us.

hi Kathleen, destruction and tragedy is not always sad...the ones involved learns and lives...becoming someone stronger..the task is to stay positive..i think the sign of healing starts when you learn to laugh at yourself...i love your note and sensitive photo. thanks for sharing.

Hi Kathleen, I like the way how you've pp'd the picture and your note a lot.

Gulf Shores are my favorite beaches in the world (so far).

There are tragedies all around us no matter how big or how small, it's how we deal with it that matters. This is an excelent pic and p.p. work well done.

Mike

So eloquently written Kat! And the grateful message written on the devistated building, "I LIVE." Reminders they are to me of all God's mercies and care. With Job may I always maintain the proper perspctive and attitude, "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord." That is rarely easy to say when were in a "trial of life" such as the South experienced or when one's health falters or some other calamity hits, but it is the right and proper attitude for God's children to have. Nicely done!

God's best always,

Tim

'Out of all things bad, comes something good.' I think this is true in all life. Sometimes we just have to look a little harder. Even though the wrath of the hurricane ripped this persons life apart...he is still alive. This is a wonderful picture Kat to help us open our eyes and be thankful for what we have. Your note as always is fill with love of life, and sensitivity for others.
Thanks for sharing.
God be with you,
Liz

Everything has its good points. At least this person lived. Many victims of this and other natural disasters did not. I guess every cloud has the proverbial silver lining. Thanks for bringing the reality side to light. May we always be thankful for our blessing and prayerful for those who are not so fortunate. Keep up the good work.

I like the way you made this photo look like a hurricane Kat. Your note is worth as many points as your photo. Sometimes going through tragedies, can make us stronger, more caring, and more understanding of each other.
Great idea to show this image of Ivans destruction. Glad you were able to rebuild your life.

I enjoy very much the form you apply, to simulate the hurricane. It make all the difference. Without it the photo had maibe a punch... But not the same... Great!

Well done Kathleen. Awesome photo and awesome note. Great job on this one :-)

Really like how you have presented this shot Kat. Your sensitivity shows through in the shot and in your note. Excellent PP.
Paul.

Looking back on 2004, many people will only remember the catastrophes caused by nature, I guess. I like this shot Kat, but I think it wouldn't be as good without your note. I think you used a very creative filter here. TFS. Excellent idea to show us the order amidst the chaos ;o).

Extremely beautiful and inspired, Kat - in both words and image. I really like the hurricane frame although you have to know it to realise that that is what it is. But it simply looks good, and that's what counts. You could maybe have used a blue background instead of the white, maybe even with some waves in - to sort of show where those hurricanes come from.

I can't imagine the pain and suffering these people have went through.

Nice note again!
Very imaginative way to illustrate your words.
Good work on your picture. ***

Nice picture and I like the note attached to it. I prefer my winter instead to have hurricane. Each time, a hurricane over there is a tragedy, very bad. And the insurances, most of the times, don't cover the damages.
Best regards
Guy

And I hope you will live forever...
