When the 20 to 30 foot first tidal wave blasted the shores, the force of the water ripped out the beach road and moved all the sand from the beaches and spread it over an area approximately one half a mile. Many buildings where completely filled with sand. I live 7 miles from the beach and had sand and seashells on the roof and in the yard!
Now, this sand has become a very precious commodity. Moving all the sand back to the beach, sifting through this sand to remove dangerous things like glass, etc. is a huge project.
Here is where the humor comes in.....
Looting, of course, was a common problem in the towns, but who who have thought that people would steal the sand??
It became such a problem that the State formed a new type of police SWAT unit that we all affectionaly referred to as the "Sand Police Patrol". They constantly patrolled the areas and if you looked as tho you were about to lift a grain of sand and slip it in your pocket, you were issued an extremely hefty fine. I am serious. I know the sand is a precious commodity, but my sense of humor found this amusing. Soon signs went up everywhere and this is one of them. This is a pile across the road from the beach awaiting the sifting and moving process.
I am reminded of a portion of a poem "A Grain of Sand" written by Robert Service:

For look! Within my hollow hand,
I hold a single grain of sand
and wonder what it means.
If I had eyes to see,
and brain to understand,
I think Life's mystery might be
Solved in this grain of sand......
*****************************************

At least the Police Sand Parol must have this as their motto!
Tech:
1. Original photo
2. Adjusted contrast, trying to lower the "over exposure" of the white sand mentioned previously.(thank you!)
3. Resized for web in four steps, sharpening twice.
4. Chose simple frame, added signature and logo.

Welcome to my little corner of TL here and I appreciate any comments and suggestions that you give me. Thank you.....:O)

lol....very informational picture, and interesting notes

Hello Kat, this is a good picture and a special note. You are a good person, and can see beauty in all that is around you. Thank you for being part of mine and Anne's life for a time. I think God wanted our paths to cross, because you helped me so much.
Praying for you health, and the angel that watches over you.

Kat,

Your story & photo made me chuckle, what a funny twist to the aftermath. Thanks for sharing and God's best,

Tim

Interesting note :-) It does give the photo a different meaning. But it's still very funny, loool!!
As for the photo, you captured the subject very well, the colors are perfect, but it might have looked good too if you haven't included the top part and just left the sand, what do you think??
Great work.
Ana

hi kathleen, i like the way u place your logo at the tracks....nice photo with a great message....everyone is trying to get a piece of everything nowadays. you complete this photo with another great note...love what you always do to bring meaning to your works. God bless.

Isn't there another sign "please deposit your sand here" ?
I remember a storm over here (northsea) that took huge chunks out of the dunes (where under normal circumstances the tide never comes) and weakened this natural defense against floods.

Informative note and a well saturated and humorous picture to go with it.

Darn and I needed some for my cat's box! It does sound far fetched, but I can imagine what would happen if everyone took "just a little bit". Soon there would be nothing left for all to enjoy. So sad that we have to police the areas of destruction to prevent further damage by fellow people! A great capture and very interesting story to accompany the post. Thanks for your continuing entertaining and educational posts.

Well seen and wonderful note thanks for sharing this learnt a bit too

Great photo journalism, Kat. This fits in so well with your entire series on last year's hurricanes. And you managed to tone down the whiteness of the sand very nicely. Thank you.

Funny note Kat, and a funny pic to go along... one thing strikes me though; you seem to have forgotten to tell us what you did with the sand on your roof... GOTCHA!!

This is a funny photo Kat. I know the disaster of a hurricane is not funny, but it really does seem odd when fines are applied to moving sand around. Seems to be so much of it everywhere in Florida...I suppose they will eventually load it into trucks and take it back to the beach after filtration. I shouldn't think too many people would be wanting any sand after all of it blowing around during the hurricane. They will be only too glad to see it back on the beach where it belongs. Anyway, you caught this sign nicely and given us a big smile. Thank you.
