Growing up in the deep South, Spanish Moss was a common sight for me. It has been a part of my life forever.

Some say it is not a moss at all and it related to the pineapple plant. It is definitely NOT a parasite plant and only uses the tree to grow on. It makes it's own food similiar to an air plant.

Henry Ford stuffed the seats of his very first Model-T car with Spanish Moss.

It is being explored today by the medical field as a possible control for bood sugar glucose.

Spanish Moss is a survivor. It is so sensitive to the air that sustains it that the U.S. geological Survey Teams regurlarly collects samples for amounts of concentrations of lead, copper, nickle and other harmful chemicals from automobile exaust fumes. Large amounts are found in the moss.

One of my favorite songs is by Gordon Lightfoot entitled Spanish Moss.

Tech:
1. Macro shot of Spanish Moss with with low DOF to show oak trees it prefers
2. Adjusted contrast and color balance
3. resized in 4 steps
4. sharpened on 4th step
5. applied green frame
6. Painted second canvas, resized, and locked photo on it.
7. applied outside frame, text, signature and logo.
8. Used paint brush to highlight colors in the flowers and cloned a bit of moss to hang outside of frame for effect.

Interesting subject and notes. I am curious why you chose to resize in steps? I have often thought it might be better to do in one step, but this has turned out nicely. Is there advantage to that technic? TFS

Beautiful post! I love the way the moss hangs out of the framed photo as in a "shadowbox". It has a three deminsional look to it. I too grew up in the shadow of this plant and miss it a lot in the countryside. Thanks for the memories.

Very BEAUTIFUL one Kat... I like the PP U did and the border is just great.... The notes are interesting and the image in detail :) Thanks for sharing :)

Take care...
- Hima.

Hi Kat,
A beautiful and creative photo its going to my favorites file. I like the frame you put it in. Great job as usual capturing the unsual. Thanks for Sharing
Jim

Nice use of macro with leaving the background viewable!! I really like how the moss hangs out of the picture. I am also interested in the resizing by steps technique, but will check out your responce to n0xdw. Nice shot!
Michelle

Great shot with a great note Kat. Love the way you have the moss dangling out of frame, marvellous technique and a wonderful shot. TFS

Hi Kathleen

I like the overlap of the moss outside the frame & the additional spslash of color added by the yellow & red flowers. Good dof. Well done!

I love the look of that spanish moss! It has such a beautiful design! Nice pp work done,Kathleen! Beautiful frame! Michel

It is supposed to have a lot of that in Louisianne! I like how you make it over the frame! Great POV!

What an amazing plant this is. I've never seen one actually growing. Only seen the moss sold in bags for floral decorations. I love the way you've cloned it to hang outside of the frame. Interesting facts in the note Kat. It took me a while to find your logo nestled in with the yellow flowers. I enjoy looking for it.

Hey I like your shot. I like your post processing on the tree moss hanging over the frame you created. Really cool shot. THanks for sharing.

Hi Kat.
Now, I'm not a fan of pics flopping over borders as such, but in this case I do have to concede it works :) It would work even more if the very bottom bit of the Moss obscured the "M" in Moss too :)
The Spanish Moss itself is very well captured--focus and exposure are excellent. The background could possibly be a tad more out-of-focus to emphasise the moss more, but that is a bit of a nit pick :)

Sheldon (shel)
